LABEL HOLDER FOR DOCUMENT FILING SYSTEMS Filed Sept. s, 1956 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States LABEL HOLDER FOR DOCUMENT FILING SYSTEMS The present invention concerns improvements in label holders for use with file folders, guide cards or the like.

The principal object of the invention is to ensure that one label holder cannot become hidden by another.

According to the present invention a label holder for attachment to an edge of a folder or card consists of a member with a V-shaped base which passes through an opening in the vfolder or card, and two arms which lie parallel to, but spaced from, the folder or card and which towards their free edges are turned inwards and then outwards so as to form two flanges which form a base for a label and cooperate with inturned edges of a transparent sheath, the width of the holder across the parallel arms being at least as great as the width of the sheath.

Preferably one arm is divided into several tongues separated by gaps, so as to cooperate with a series of openings in the edge of a folder or card.

The accompanying drawings show an example of label holders according to the present invention used in a filing system such as is described in more detail and claimed in my application Serial No. 453,273, filed August 31, 1954. In these drawings:

In the system shown in Figures 1 and 2 there is a series of folders 2, each consisting of a long leaf 4 and short leaf 6 joined by a narrow base 8. A bar 10 is threaded through holes 12 in the base and located in position relatively to the hole 16 in the base.

The folders rest on three transverse members 18, 2i) and 22. The rear end of the bar 10 engages beneath a rear transverse member 24 which has an under-surface sloping downwards and rearwards from a level above the intermediate members. The front ends of the bar are bowed upwards at 26 to give them resilience in a vertical direction and each has a book 28 open upwards which engages a downward lip 30 on a front transverse member 32. The transverse members 18, 22, 24, and 32 are carried by a rigid frame which forms no part of the present invention. This frame includes uprights G1 and bearers 33 which rest on adjustable lugs 35 inserted into the uprights.

Patented Nov. 10, 1959 ICC Each folder leaf 4 carries a label holder 52 consisting, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, of a V-shaped base 53 and two arms 54 and 56 which lie parallel to but spaced from the folder leaf. One arm 56 and half of the base 53 is divided into several tongues 57 separated by gaps so as to cooperate with a series of openings 58 in the edge of the folder leaf. In elfect each arm plus half of the base constitutes a limb of the label holder. Towards their free edges the two arms 54 and 56 are turned inwards and then outwards to form flanges 59 which form a base for a label 60 and cooperate with inturned edges of a transparent sheath 62. The width of the label holder across the parallel arms is slightly greater than the width of the sheath. By reason of this construction it is impossible for one label to get hidden behind another. If it is desired to give more prominence to one label than another then it is possible to locate some of the folders in advance of the others providing that the parallel arms of the label holders are of longitudinal length greater than the distance by which some folders are in advance of the others. The different positions of the folders are obtained by varying either the position of the projections 14 on the bars or the positions of the corresponding holes 16 in the folders.

I claim:

1. The combination of a thin leaf and a label holder, said leaf having at least one hole separated by a strip of said leaf from an edge thereof, said holder comprising two parallel spaced apart limbs joined at one of their ends by a V-shaped bight portion, said limbs at their opposite ends having portions extending toward one another, thence extending outwardly to form flanges, the adjacent edges of said flanges being a less distance apart than said limbs, said strip having a width between said hole and said edge substantially equal to the distance between the vertex of said bight portion and the point of closest approach between said flanges, said holder being mounted on said leaf with said limbs parallel to and spaced from said leaf and said vertex in said hole engaging the edge thereof adjacent the said edge of the leaf, and said adjacent edges of said flanges closely adjacent said leaf edge for retaining said holder on the leaf Without substantial wabble, and a sheath mounted over said flanges, said sheath having means along opposite edges thereof engaging said flanges, the spacing between said limbs being substantially equal to the spacing between said opposite edges of the sheath so that the sheath does not extend outoutwardly beyond said limbs.

2. A combination according to claim 1 wherein said V-shaped bight portion defines a 45 angle on each side of a central plane.
