Description

NOV. 3, 1959 I s, BROWN 2,911,022
NAILING JIG Filed 001'.- 14. 19 57 Stan/e H. Brakn 0 3 ,0 y INVENTOR.
United States Patent NAILING JIG Stanley H. Brown, Whitesboro, N.
Application October 14, 1957, Serial No. 689,808
3 Claims. (Cl. 1451) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in nailing jigs for use particularly by carpenters in framing work and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for squaring and firmly holding the studs in position While being nailed to the plates.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a nailing jig or framing stud holder of the character described which may be expeditiously mounted in position on the Work and removed therefrom.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a nailing jig or framing stud holder of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight, and Which'may be manufactured at low cost. I,
These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a nailing jig constructed in accordance with the present invention in use;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof; and
Figure 3 is a front elevational view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of elongated, longitudinally spaced and aligned jig plates 4 of suitablemetal. The plates 4 are adapted to be mounted longitudinally on the framing plate 5 for receiving therebetween the stud to be nailed, as indicated at 6.
2,911,022 Patented Nov. 3, 1959 ice against lateral movement and the flange 7 retains the stud 6 while it is being nailed. Reference character 12 designates holes which permit the device to be nailed to the work, if desired. In Figure 2 of the drawing, reference character 13 designates a nail which has been toed into the work.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A nailing jig of the character described comprising:
7 a pair of plates for mounting on a framing plate and The plates 4 are connected by an integral, upstanding back flange 7 which is engageable behind the stud 6 for positively anchoring same in position while being nailed. Rising from the adjacent or inner ends of the plates 4 are side flanges 8 which receive the stud 6 therebetween and square same on the plate 5.
Also formed integrally with the metallic plates 4 are depending front flanges 9 which are engageable with the framing plate 5 for anchoring said metallic plates 4 thereon while the stud 6 is being nailed. The flanges 9 terminate at their lower ends in outturned lips 10 which may be tapped with a hammer to facilitate removing the jig from the work when desired. Adjacent the flanges 9, the inner end portions of the plates 4 have formed therein notches or recesses 11 for sighting the usual marks which have previously been placed on the plate 5 for locating the position of the stud 6.
It is thought that the use of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the framing plate 5 is marked in the usual manner and the jig is positioned thereon, the marks appearing through the notches or recesses 11. The stud 6 is then positioned on the framing plate 5 between the flanges 8 and engaged with the back flange 7. The stud may now be nailed in the usual manner.
The flanges 9= anchor the plates. 4:
spaced from each other for receiving therebetween a stud to be nailed to said framing plate, an upstanding back flange connecting the jig plates and engageable behind the stud, a pair of front flanges depending from the jig plates and engageable with the framing plate for anchoring the jig plates thereon while the stud is being nailed, a pair of upstanding flanges on the adjacent portions of the jig plates for squaring the stud on the framing plate, and outturned lips on the lower ends of the front flanges for receiving an impact tool for removing the jig from the work. i
2. A nailing jig of the character described comprising: a pair of elongated, longitudinally aligned and spaced jig plates to be mounted longitudinally on a framing plate for receiving'therebetween a stud to be nailed to said framing plate, an upstanding back flange connecting said jig plates and engageable behind the stud for retaining same while it is being nailed, a pair of upstanding flanges on the inner ends of the jig plates for receiving the stud therebetween for squaring same on the framing plate, means for retaining said jig plates in position on the framing plate, said means comprising front flanges depending from the inner end portions of the jig plates in spaced relation to the second named flanges and engageable laterally with the framing plate, said jig plates having sighting notches in the inner end portions thereof between said second named and said front flanges, and outturned lips on the lower ends of said front flanges for receiving an impact tool for removing the jig from the Work.
3. A nailing jig of the character described comprising: a pair of elongated, longitudinally aligned and spaced jig plates to be mounted longitudinally on a framing plate for receiving therebetween a stud to be nailed to said framing plate, an upstanding back flange connecting said jig plates and engageable behind the stud for retaining same while it is being nailed, a pair of upstanding flanges on the inner ends of the jig plates for receiving the stud therebetween for squaring same on the framing plate, and means for retaining said jig plates in position on the framing plate, said means comprising front flanges depending from the inner end portions of the jig plates and engageable laterally with the framing plate, the lastnamed flanges comprising outturned lips on the lower ends thereof for receiving an impact tool for removing the jig from the work, said jig plates having sighting notches in the inner end portions thereof.
