1 Claim. (Cl. 20-53) This invention relates to a pivoted window structure consisting of hollow metal profiles and having double stop or end flanges.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means facilitating swinging movement of one part of the window through another part of the window frame and into a vertical position, for the purpose of cleaning.
A special object of the invention is to provide means affording swinging of the window part or parts without necessitating two separate center pivots therefor and a powerful brake for braking the considerable moving masses as it was required with conventional types of such pivoted windows in order to be able to swing the pivoted sash through the upper window frame.
With these and further objects in view, the window sash in accordance with the present invention is fulcrumed on a single stationary pivot whose axis coincides with the axis in which the center of gravity of the window is located in the immediate vicinity of the plane of the inner flanges of the pivoted sash; the upper stop flanges of the window sash are long and the upper stop flanges of the window frame are short, and, vice versa, the lower flanges of the pivoted sash are short and the lower flanges of the window frame are longer and rated in such a way that the lower part of the window can be swung through the upper part of the window frame and that the pivoted sash can be swung into a vertical position.
This construction and mounting of the pivoted sash on a stationary axis which coincides with the centroidal axis offers the important advantage that the considerable masses of such pivoted window sashes are compensated in all positions of the pivoted sash, whereby a powerful brake for braking the masses can be dispensed with and only a light braking or locking device is required in order to lock the pivoted sash at different opening angles. Moreover, by swinging the pivoted sash about a stationary axis the construction of the bearings and of the braking device is considerably simplified.
Other and further objects, features and advantages of the invention will be pointed out hereinafter and appear in the appended claim forming part of the application.
In the accompanying drawings several now preferred embodiments of the invention are shown by way of illustration and not by Way of limitation.

Similar reference numerals denote similar parts in the different views.
Referring now to the drawings in greater detail, and first to Figs. 1-3, it will be seen that the window sash frame is mounted on a sttaionary horizontal pivot whose axis a coincides with the centroidal axis of the window frame. The bearings of the pivoted or swingable window sash frame are indicated at 1. Both the window frame and the frame of the pivoted sash consist of hollow metal profiles, the respective frame parts above and below the axis a having different profiles. In the preferred embodiment as shown, a similar box-type profile with lower and upper inner and with lower and upper outer flanges denoted 6, 8; 7, 9 respectively arranged in similar distances [1 and in similar positions is provided. It will be seen from the drawing that the outer and inner sash frame parts or profiles 2 and 3 of the swinging sash frame type differ from each other only in regard to the length of the respective inner and outer flanges 6 to 9 and in particular to an offset flange 9. This almost identical shape of the profiles offers the advantage that the outer and inner sash frame parts 2 and 3 fit well together at the butt joint and can be smoothly connected to the sash frame by welding. The said shape of the profile also renders it possible, if desired, to use only a single profile, i.e. the sash box profile 2, with the longer flanges 8, 9, from which the profile 3 with the shorter flanges 6 and 7 can be easily obtained by cutting of predetermined sections of the aforesaid flanges.
As shown in the drawing, an impressed groove 10 for a locking bar 11 is provided on the outer side of the box type profiles 2, or 3, said groove being bridged by a covering strip 12, for guiding the locking bar 11 on all sides. Said locking bars 11 which are mounted in the pivoted sash 2, 3 are operated from a central locking mechanism and may engage in the Window frame 4, 5. The stationary window frame parts 4, 5 are, respectively, provided with upper and lower stop flanges 4a, 5b; 5a, 5b, for respective cooperation with said upper and lower sash frame flanges 9, 8 and 7, 6. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3, there is provided a double glazing in which the outer pane 13 is mounted in the pivoted sash frame 2, 3, while the inner pane 14 is arranged in an inner frame 15 also consisting of metal profiles. This inner frame is connected wth the outer frame 2, 3 by hinges 15a or the like. The two panes 13 and 14 are arranged at a greater distance, in order to be able to provide in the interspace (Fig. 3) a Venetian blind diagrammatically indicated at 16.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 to 6 there is provided an air tight double glazing (so-called thermopane glazing) in which the two panes 13 and 14 are arranged in the pivoted sash 2, 3 at a somewhat smaller distance from each other. According to the invention, the arrangement in each case is such that the pivoted window sash frame is mounted merely for rotation about the stationary axis a which coincides with the centroidal axis of the window (practically in the middle between the two panes 13 and 14) and which is located in the immediate vicinity of the planes of the inner flanges 6 and 8 of the pivoted sash, at a distance 0 from the plane of the flange (Fig. 2) which distance c amounts to a few millimeters only. Moreover, as shown especially in Figs. 5 and 6, the upper flanges 8 and 9 of the pivoted sash are of a greater length than the upper stop flanges 17 and 18 of the window frame 4, and, vice versa, the lower flanges 6 and 7 of the pivoted sash are shorter than the lower flanges 19 and 20 of the window frame.
Owing to the construction and mounting of the pivoted window as hereinbefore described it is possible, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6, not only to open the window in the direction of arrow A to any desired extent, but also to turn it through nearly 180 into the position shown in Fig. 6, whereat the lower sash frame 3 of the pivoted sash can be swung through the upper part 4 of the window frame. 7
Both the pivoted frame 2, of the sash and the window frame 4, 5 are made from drawn or pressed metal profiles, preferably of light metal. Such drawn profiles can be made very accurately and with small tolerances, so that tight engagement both on the outer and inner flanges of the profiles is ensured. This tight engagement is also ensured for the reason that the distance b of the lower flanges on a box profile is smaller than the depth t of the box profile, so that very small tolerances are provided. In practice, for instance, a box profile 2 or 3 which is adapted for windows up to a size of about 3 x 3 meters, has a cross section of 32 x 55 mms. The distance I) of the flanges accordingly is relatively small and amounts to about 35 mms. only.
The present invention is not restricted to the embodiments as shown. Thus, for instance, the window may also be pivoted on a vertical centroidal axis so as to be swingable through 180. In this case the windows shown in the drawing will be merely turned through 90 in the plane of the drawing, so that the pivotal axis a, Fig. 1, is vertically disposed.
Generally speaking, it should be noted that while the inventionhas been described in detail with respect to now preferred examples and embodiments of the invention, various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and it is intended, therefore, to cover all such changes and modifications in the appended claim.
I claim:
A window structure of the swinging sash type comprising a window frame having an inner face and an outer face, a sash frame of a generally rectangular configuration in cross-section having inner and outer surfaces and having further an upper and a lower part, each part provided with two parallel, spaced abutting flanges ex- .4 tending therefrom generally in the plane of said surfaces, said window frame having an upper and a lower portion spaced uniformly from each other and from said sash frame when said sash frame is in window closing position, horizontal pivot means for said sash frame mounted with the axis thereof located substantially at the center of gravity of said sash frame and midway of said window frame and of said sash frame and approximately in the plane of said inner surface of said sash frame, stop flanges on said upper and said lower portions of said window frame and extending toward said sash frame and shaped to cooperate with said flanges on said sash frame, the two flanges on the lower part of said sash frame being shorter than the flanges on the upper part of said sash frame and being adapted to swing about said pivot means past said flanges on said upper portion of said window frame when said sash frame is turned from said window closing position about to another window position, the stop flanges on the lower portion of said window frame being longer than the stop flanges on the upper portion of said Window frame, said stop flanges of said window frame engaging in overlapping relation the abutting flanges of said sash frame in said window closing position, said pivot means lying in a plane of said abutting flanges located closest to said inner surface of said sash frame, said outer surface of said sash frame and said outer face of said window frame being substantially aligned with each other when said window is in closing position, one of said predetermined flanges on said upper end of said sash frame being offset with respect to the other of said predetermined flanges on said upper end of said sash frame.
