UNITED STATES PATENT FFIQE.
LYMAN D. HOWARD AND ALBERT CHANGE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA., AS- SIGNORS TO THE AMERICAN LUBRIOATING COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY.
CAR-AXLE LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,987, dated December 25, 1883. Application filed September 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LYMAN D. HOWARD and ALBERT CHANCE, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and countyof Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Oar-Axle Lubricators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are views of opposite sides of a lubricator embodying our invention, the covering being in section. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view thereof, a portion being sectional. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the roller of the lubricator.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists in the main of an open frame composed of concave end pieces united by traverses, and provided with depending lugs, in combination with a coiled spring and a wiper-roller, said lugs forming both the bearings for said roller and the means of connecting said spring with the frame, the spring supporting the frame and superimposed parts and holding the wiper-roller against the axle or journal.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a coiled spring, and B an open metallic frame, which is constructed of front and rear pieces, a a, and traverses 1), connecting said pieces a a. Depending from the central portions of the pieces a a are lugs G, through which the coil of the spring A is passed and secured, thus connecting the spring and frame, and said lugs also form the bearings for a wiper-roller,
D, which occupies a position within the open frame B, and is provided with bristles G. The heads E of the roller may be removably fitted to the journals F, so that when they are worn or broken they may be replaced by new parts. It will be seen that the spring supports the frame and superimposed parts, and when the lubricator is in position, it being properly compressed in the box, the wiper-roller is held against the journal or axle so as to be rotated thereby, by which means the lubricant is nicely and uniformly carried to the journal or axle. It will also be seen that the lugs 0 form both the bearings for the axis of the wiper-roller and the means of connecting said spring with the frame A.
We do not claim a'mctallic frame, nor a wiper-roller sustained thereon, neither do we claim a covering of absorbent material for the spring, as we are aware that such features are Old; but, I
Having fully described our invention, what we do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a lubricator for car-aXles,the combination of an open frame composed of end pieces united by traverses, and provided with depending lugs, a coiled spring having its upper coil attached to said lugs, and a wiper-roller j ournaled in said lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
L. I). HOIVARD.
ALBERT CHANCE. Witnesses:
