SAP-FEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 290,910, dated December 25, 1883 Application filed May 24, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. MIronELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saybrook, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sap-Feeders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in evaporators used in the manufacture of sugar; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of my improved evaporator. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail side View of the same.
In carrying my invention into effect, I employ a pan, A, preferably rectangular and superposed upon a furnace, B, the chimney a of which is connected thereto by a narrow passage or flue, a.
Between the pan and chimney, and with its bottom forming the top of this passage, is arranged a small tank or superheater, G, which is supported upon an extension of the masonry of the furnace by deflected metal plates 1), secured to the sides of the said tank.

E is the supply-pipe conducting the sirup or material from the tank D to the tank or superheater O, and which is provided with a cock and with a valve, F, adapted to open and close the passage of pipe E, for which purpose the said valve is connected by the jointed connection f g to one end of the centrally-pivotedlever G, the other end of said lever having a float, H, attached thereto bya rod, h, adapted to rise and fall with the liquid in the pan A. The lever G is pivoted upon the upright G, suitably secured in place. A pipe, I, leads from the top of the cover Aof the pan A to the chimney a, to allow the passing off of the steam from the contents of the pan.
In operation the liquid or sirup which is supplied to the tank 0, and partially heated therein, as it continues to flow or rise, will overflow through the aperture or pipe 0 and pass into the pan A, where it is evaporated, its precipitate being converted into sugar. As the liquid rises in the pan A, the float H will be proportionally'lifted therewith and cause the closing of the valve F, which will stop the flow of the liquid through the pipe E. As the process of evaporation takes place, the liquid will of course descend, which will cause the descent of the float H therein, and consequently reverse the movement of the valve and cause the flow of the liquid again.
Having thus fully described my invention,
- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an evaporator, the combination, with the evaporating-pan superposed upon the furnace and the flue or chimney a, of the superheater or tank and the flue-tube passed through the latter, and having means to cut off the passage or supply thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Q
2. In an evaporator, the combination, with the pan, the superheater or tank, an overflowpassa'ge connecting the chambers of the same and .the supply-tank, of the supply-pipe and its valve, the jointed connection, the lever and float connected to the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
