KITCHEN-SAFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,879, dated December 25, 1883.

Be it known that 1, JAMES S. HAGERTY, of the city of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Kitchen-Safes, of which the following is a specification.

To fully understand the nature of my im provement, it must be understood that prior to my invention kitchen-safes have invariably been made with flat ventilating-plates, punctured to represent some ornamental pattern. The plate thus formed offers only slight resistance to pressure applied to its outer surface and is easily dented or buckled, as its strength depends entirely upon thethickness of the metal. In my invention Istiffen the said plate by forming apanel therein, leaving, preferably, only a narrow edge to allow for its attaohment to the wood-work of the sink. I also stamp within the panel annular V-grooves to further stiffen the plate.

In the further description of my said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a parthereof, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view of a kit-chensafe embodying my improvements. Fig. II is a transverse section of a part of one of the sides of the safe, showing the panel on an enlarged scale. Fig. III is an enlarged front View of the improved ventilating plate.

The panel herein shown is of a rectangular outline; but it may be of some ornamental design, if preferred. fore alluded to are denoted by a. One advantage of the panel is that when the sheet is secured within a groove in the frame-work of the safe the surface of the plate is thrown farther forward, and'inay be fair or flush with the surface of the frame-work, as shown in Fig. II, which gives to the safe a better appearance.

I claim as my invention 1. In a kitchen-safe, the ventilatingplates thereof having a panel formed therein, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In akitchen-safe, the ventilating-plates thereof having a panel formed therein, as described, and V-grooves within the said panel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
