UNITED STATES ATENT Grrrcn.
BENNET GREIG, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
FRAME FOR FEATHEFl ORNAMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,679, dated December 25, 1883.
Application filed July 27, 1883. (No model.)
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNE'I GREIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Frames for Feather Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to frames or supports for feather ornaments, used for trimming hats and other articles of dress, such ornaments representing the wings and other portions of birds or the entire bodies thereof.
These frames have heretofore been made of buckram out to the required shape, and usually covered with wadding; but no provision has been made for giving to the buckram the shape or figure of the part to be represented by the ornament; and to overcome this defect is one object of my invention, to which end it consists in pressing the material into the required shape by means of dies, using buckram or other fibrous or textile material. With the buckram or its substitute is combined a covering of canton-flannel or other napshowing material, for the purpose of promoting the adhesion of the feathers or imitating down, and when an entire bird is to be represented the frame is made in two parts or sections, one forming the back and the other the breast of the bird, and either or both parts are provided with lateral wing-supporting projections, as hereinafter more fully described.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A design ates the body of theframe, composed of a foundation, B, of buckram or other fibrous or textile material, and a covering, 0, of canton-flannel or other nap-showing material.
D indicates the part or'section representing the back of the bird; E, the part representing the breast thereof, and F the lateral projections of such parts.
In carrying out my invention, I unite the canton-flannel or its substitute to the buckram or its substitute, and press the whole into the desired shape by means of dies, which are usually heated, and when buckram is used the size inherent thereto answers the purpose of uniting the materials, as well as stiffening the same; but when another material destitute of size is used in lieu of the buckram, an adhesive substancesuch as shellacis used to unite and stiffen the materials.
By the napshowing material the frame acquires a soft surface, which tends to absorb the glue or other substance used for attaching the feathers, thereby promoting their adhesion, while such surface also forms an imitationof down, and hence may be advantageously left exposed in some places-as on the breast and back of the bird-it being properly colored.
The two parts or sections are united on the edges by stitches or other suitable means, and by providing either or both parts with the projections F a convenient and secure support is obtained for the wings of the bird.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a frame for feather ornaments, representing portions or the whole of a bird, composed of a fibrous or textile material stiffen ed and pressed into shape, substantially as described.
2. A frame for feather ornaments, represent-- ing portions or the whole of a bird, in which a foundation of fibrous or textile material is provided with a covering of nap-showing material, the whole being united and pressed into shape, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENNET GREIG. [L. s.]
