111E fT AT iATE r c 7 HARMER DENNEY, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, YORK, N. Y.
TO HIMSELF, AND ALEXANDER \VEBSTER, OF NEW GAS-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,682, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed April 11, 1883.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, HARMER DENNEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in gas-engines, whereby the igniting gas-jet can be cut off very rapidly and effectually, so that the concussion produced by the explosion cannot eX- tinguish the said igniting-jet.
My invention relates to improvements in gas-engines; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement and construction of the parts, as
hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of a gasengine provided with my improvement, parts being broken away. Figs. 2 and 3 are crosssectional elevations of the valve, showing the same in different positions.
The gas-engine is constructed with a cylinder, A, piston B, piston-rod O, connecting-rod D, and a crank-shaft, E, in the usual manner, in which crank-shaft a pinion, F, is mounted, which engages with a cog-wheel, G, of double the diameter, which cog-wheel is provided in one side with a cam-groove, H, into which a roller, J, projectswhich is secured in a pin on a pivoted lever, K, to the free end of which lever a connecting-rod, L, is pivoted, the upperend of which is pivoted to a crank-arm, M, of a rocking valve-plug, N, provided with a wide slot,0,and narrower chambers P,extending 'sidewise in both directions from the slot 0. The valve-plug N is held in an aperture, Q, in a block, R, which block is provided with a vertical slot, S, in the lower part of which a gas-burner, T, is located. A channel, U, ex-
tends from the opening in the block to the explosion-chamber V. A segmental cavity,W, is formed in one side of the opening in the (No model.)
block R, and into the said cavity a fine flame projects from a burner, X, in a tube, Y. The cam-groove H is made circular about threequarters of its length, and the remaining part, a, is pointed toward the rim of the wheel.
The operation is as follows: For every explosion two strokes of the piston take place, and the wheel G is revolved once. WVhile the piston is drawing in gasand compressing it, the plug N closes the channel U, and the gas issuing from the small burner X through the cavity W and the left-hand channel P is ignited by the flame of the burner T. As soon as the mixture of gas and air in the explosionchamber is compressed, the roller J has arrived at the pointed part a of the cam-groove-that is, of the part extendingtoward the rim of the wheel G-and this part of the cam-groove throws the lever K upward very rapidly and suddenly, thereby turning the valve-plug N into the position shown in Fig. 3,whereby the left-hand channel P and the bottom or lower part of the slot S are closed, and the right-hand channel I? is brought in communication with the channel U. \Vhen the plug N is in the position shown in Fig. 2,a tongue of flame extends from the burner X into the slot 0, and when the valve is turned the tongue of flame projects from the inner end of the left-hand channel P as long as the outer end of the said channel is in communication with the cavity W, connected with the pipe Y, containing the burner X. As soon as the outer end of the left-hand channel P passes beyond the lower end of the cavity W, the supply of gas is out off. The tongue of flame immediately darts through the right-hand channel 1 into the channel U and ignites the gas of the explosionchamber, part of which gas or explosive mixture forces itself into the channel U and the right-hand channel 1? as soon as the right-hand channel 1? is brought into communication with the channel U. The concussion produced by the explosion cannot extinguish the flame of the burner T, as the communication between the explosion-chamber and that part of the slot S containing the burner T is cut off. The flame of the burner X is extinguished, but is ignited again by the flame of the burner '1. As soon as the gaseous mixture in the explosion-chamber has been exploded, the camgroove acts on the roller J of the lever K in such a manner that the plug N is brought back into the position shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a gas-engine, the combination, with the cylinder, of the block R, having an aperture, Q, provided with a cavity, W, a slot, S, in the block, a channel, U, extending from the aperture to the explosion-chamber, of the plug N, adapted to rock in the aperture Q, and provided with a slot, 0, and channels P, ex tending sidewise from each side of the slot, and of a cam for operating the valve-phi g N, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a gas-engine, the combination, with the cylinder, of the block B, having an aperture, Q, a cavity, W, and the channel U, of the plug N, having a slot, 0, and side channels, 1?, and of the burners T and X, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a gasengine, the combination, with the cylinder, of a rocking valve-plug and a wheel provided with a cam-groove suddenly extending at one point toward the rim of the wheel, and of devices for transmitting the motion from the cam-Wheel to the rocking valveplug, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. HARMER DENNEY.
