JOHN E. AMERMAN, or BROOKLYN, New YORK.
GAS-ENGINE IGNITER.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN E. A MEIiMA1v,
a citizen 'of the United-States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engine Igniters, of.
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to igniting devicesfor ex )losive en ines and it consists in the novel feature hereinafter described and claimed. 7
An object of the invention is to provide. an attachment adapted to be applied to the cylinder of an explosion engine having means for permitting the explosive gases to enter the attachment as the gases are compressed by the movement of the piston in the cylinder. Also means is provided for regulating the flow of gas from the cylinder into the attachment whereby the gas'may be permitted to pass from the cylinder into the attachment in a stream of desired diameter. A catalytic substance as for. instance platinum sponge or aluminum is held within the attachment and when the gas contacts with the same it is ignited. When the pistonbegins to move away from that end of the cylinder at which the attachment is applied the flame is drawn into the cylinder and the body of compressed gas contained therein is exploded and thus the force or momentum incident to the explosion is applied to the piston and accelerates its movement away from that end of the cylinder at which the attachment-us mounted. The said attachment is made globular in form in order that it may the more readily withstand the sud- .den pressure and forces to which it is subjected when the explosion takes place.
explosive engines and a piston 2 is movably mounted therein in the usual manner. The cylinder'l is provided at its end withan opening 3 through which a spark'plug is usually passed. In the present invention the spark plug .is removedfrom the cylinder and the. attachment" hereinafter describedis inserted in the opening 3.
a The attachment comprises a nipple 4 which is screwed in the opening 3 and the I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 30, 1915. Application filed February 20, 1915. Serial No. 9,692.
transverse sectional area of the passage-waythrough the nipple 4 is regulated or controlled by a valve 5 turnably mounted in the said nipple. A hemispherical portion 6is formed at the upper end of the nipple 4 and a hemispherical member 7 is screw-serted into engagement with the upper portion of the part 6 there being a gasket 8 of any suit able material interposed between the meeting edges of the portion 6 and the member 7 as best shown in the drawing.
' A stem 9 is screw serted in the center of the member 7 and at the upper portion The operation of thedevice is as follows."
Assuming that'the piston is moving away from the nipple 4 upon its intake stroke the gas is admitted in the cylinder 1 in the usual manner andwhen the piston 2 begins to move toward the nipple 4 upon the compression stroke the gas is forced-through the nipple 4 and pastthe valve 5 into the interior of the portion 6 and the member 7.
.When the gas comes in contact with the catalytic substance 11 it is ignited but the flame remains in the portion 6 and the member 7 so long as the piston 2 is moving toward the nipple 4.- VVhen the piston 2 arrives at the end of its stroke toward the nip- 'ple 4 and begins to move away from the same the flame is drawn tothe nipple 4 into the cylinder 1 and the compressed gas in the- .cylinder is exploded or ignited behind the piston 2 and the piston is accelerated in its movement away from the nipple 4.
By adjusting the valve 5 the'transverse sectional area of the passage way for the gas through the nipple 4 maybe regulated so that the gas may flow from the cylinder 1 'into the portion 6 and member .7 in a comparatively finestream or coarse stream as desired. Therefore it will be seen that an igniting device adapted to be applied to an explosion engine and of simple and durable structure is' provided and that the device Operates automatically to affect the explosion of the gas and at proper time with relation to the movement of the piston. Also means is providedfor regulating the quantity of gas which may be permitted to pass from the cylinder into the explosion chamber of the device. v
Having described the invention what is claimed is.
An .igniter adapted to be applied to an engine cylinder comprising a chamber,
means for permitting gas to pass from the cylinder into the chamber, a stem" supported Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G,
