D. W. MOBRAYER.
CARTRIDGE IMPLEMENT.
N .5 Patented Dec. 18, 1883.
l I i IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHR! H I UNITED STATES DAVID IV. MOBRAYER, OF ATLANTA, ILLINOIS.
CARTRIDGE IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,594, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed August 23, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID W. MOBRAYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention appertains to improvements in a combined capper, decapper, wad-inserter, and shell-extractor; and it consists of a plunger or punch arranged within a cylinder, and of a lever pawl or presser, together with a holding device for the cartridge-shell, sub stantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved capper, decapper, wadinserter, and shell-cxtractor. Fig. is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the shell, and Fig. 5 is a detail view.
In the embodiment of my invention I construct or make a base, A, of suitable mate rial. The bottom portion of the base is recessed circularly, as at a, to adapt it to receive a cartridge-shell, with the flange thereof resting on the base. The base A has an upwardly-projecting portion, 1), to which is secured an open-ended cylinder or tube, B, which is preferably slotted in its sides, as at b.
Vithin the cylinder B the base A is provided with an extending portion or post, B, the upper end of which is made with a mortise or socket, b, Fig. 5, the function of which will be seen further on. into the cylinder B, and caused to rest on the projection or post B, for its insertion into the cartridgeshell, after the loading of the shell, Fig. 4., which is readily effected, the shell, with its load of powder and fulminate, being slid into the cylinder B, when, by continued movement of one or the other of these, the wad will be forced home against the contents of the shell.
Gis the decapper, which consists of a pin, 0, having a metallic base, shoulder F, and screw F, screwed into a short post, 0 Fig. 5, provided with a tenon, d, to enable it to be removably connected to the projection B of The wad is inserted base A by the insertion of said tenon into the mortise b of the said projection.
To effect the decapping operation, the cylinder B is slid over shell E and forced thereonto, so as to cause the pin 0 to enter the exploded cap, whereby by the continuance of the said movement of the cylinder the pin will decap or remove the cap.
I) is the eappcr, which consists of a lever, D, pivoted to the upright projection B near its lower end, and provided at said end with a cylindric tooth or projection, D, Fig. 2, so disposed as to project about centrally of the recess a of the base A. ith the cartridge or its shell placed in position in said recess and the cap inserted into the usual cavity of the shell for its reception, and by moving the lever so as to force its tooth or projection downward upon the cap, the latter will be forced home, when the operation of capping the cartridge will be effected.
It will also be seen that by means of thelatter manipulation of the capping device, (the flange of the shell resting on the base,) and by pulling on the cylinder, with the forcing of the lever toward the latter, a shell that may become partially wedged in the gun-barrel may be extracted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Ina cartridge implement, the combination of the post B, having a mortise in one end, tenoned post (3*, having decapper G, with pin 0, cylinder B, recessed base A, and lever D, pivoted to upright projection B, and having tooth or projection D substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. The recessed base A, having projecting portion 1), capper D, consisting of lever D, pivoted to projection B, and having cylindric tooth or projection D", in combination with wad-inserting mechanism consisting of post B and cylinder B, and decapping mechanism consisting of tenoned post 0', having decapper G and pin 0, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID IV. MCBRAYEB.
