CARTRIDGE DECAPPER, RECAPPER, AND RELOADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,865, dated March 11, 1884.
Application filed July-30,1881 (Model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
A Be it known that l, FALcoNoR GIFFARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in Des Moines county, and Stateof Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge Capping, Decapping, and Loading Devices, which is fully set forth and described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
ro in which--` Figure I is a perspective View of the entire device. Figs. II and III are views of the handles. Fig. IV isa vertical sectional view of the deeapping device from end to end. Fig. i 5 V is an enlarged cross-section through one of the handles, showing the capping device. Similar letters indicate similar parts. The object of my invention is to furnish a set of devices for capping, decapping, and 2o loading cartridge-shells, which are preferably put, for convenience an'dsafety, into a single tool7 in which the necessary force is applied by means oflevers, thusavoiding such violence as would explode the cap'. I accomplish this 2 5 by hinging two handles, B and C, to two shellchambers, F and G, in piece A, thus securing a leverage over the shells in the chambers.
In the handle B is a perforation, c, through which the cap escapes.
The capper is a pin or anvil, n, in the center of a recess, R, in handle B, around which a washer, m, plays, and is forced out by a` spiral spring, Z, from behind it, thus forming a cavity over the pin n to receive thecap, 3 5 Ahold it in place, and conduct it to the cavity in the shell. Vhen the handle is pressed inward, the washer recedes on the spring, and the pin n forces the cap into place in the shell. The cap `being fixed, the load is put into the 4o shell from .the opposite end, and the wads are placed in position by the use of the ramrod b,
which is hinged at its upper end in handle C, opposite the mouth of the shell-chamber F, and is folded within the handle C when not in use.
rl-he decapper M consists of a rod, d, of any suitable material, provided with a shoulder, f, and placed inside an interior shell, g, preferably of wood. A spiral spring, e, is placed upon the rod (l, which is provided atits end with the ejector-pin h, to force the cap from the cartridge-shell through the perforation c.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a cartridge ilnplement, of the cartridge-chambersF G, their support A, and handles B and O, hinged thereto, the handle B having recessed chamber wherein is supported a fixed capping-anvil surrounded by a spring-actuated washer, which 6o normally projects beyond said pin, forming a recess for the support Aof the primer, and the handle O provided with means for forcing the cartridge against the cappinganvil, all substantially as described.
2. The combination of the handle B, having cap-escape perforation c, and the handle C,
i both hinged to the support A of the decapping-chamber G, said chamber and the decapper M, located therein, having spring-actuatedcj ector-pin,all substantially as described. 3. In a cartridge implement, the combination of the handles B and O, hinged to a chamber-support, A, the handle O bearing hinged ramrod b, and the handle B having the capper a, said ramrod and capper located opposite the ends of shell-retaining chamber F in support A, all substantially as described.
FAIJGONOR GIFFARD.
