Be it known that I, ALFRED A. LAHBR-IG- GER, of Big Horn, in the county of Johnson and Territory of lVyoming, have invented a new and Improved Car-Bral:e, of which the followingisafull, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved car-brake, which is so constructed that all the brakes can be operated from the engine, or the brakes can be operated automatically by checking the speed of the engine.
The invention consists in a revolving shaft journaled longitudinally on the under side of the car, and provided with a pinion engaging with a crown-wheel mounted on a vertical shaft, to which shaft the brake-chains are fastened, whereby the brake-chains will be wound on the vertical shaft and drawn taut when the horizontal shaft or rod is revolved. The rods or shafts are provided on each end with a head and a spirally-twisted part, in which twisted part clutch-collars are mounted for coupling the rods or shafts, so that they will revolve together.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved car-brake mechanism, parts being shown in section, and the mechanism being shown attached to cars. 2 is a perspective view of one end of a bralceslial't and the clutch-collar thereon.
A red or shaft, A, is journaled on the under side of a car longitudinally, and on the said shaft a pinion, B, is mounted rigidly, which engages with a horizontal crown-whee], C, mounted rigidly on a vertical shaft, D, journaled on the bottom of the car. A rope or chain, E, is attached to the end of a rod, F, connected with one brake-shoe bar G, and passes through an eye, H, at the end of a rod, F, secured to the other brake-shoe bar G, to which bars G the brake-shoes G are attached. end of the rope or chain E is fastened to the shaft D. The shaft or rodA is provided at each end with a head, J, and back of each head J the rod or shaft is twisted spirally at I. On each of the spirally-twisted ends of the rod (X0 model.)
or shaft A a collar, K, provided with a square aperture, is loosely mounted, which collar is provided with three outwardly projecting prongs, L, having a curved wedge-shaped cross-section. A spring, M, surrounds each twisted end of the rod or shaft A between the inner end of the collar K and a fixed collar, N, mounted on the rod or shaft.
The operation is as follows: If, when the cars are coupled, the prongs L of one collar K passes in between the prongs L of the opposite collar, the rods A will be coupled to turn together on their longitudinal axes. If the rod A on the engine or tender is revolved, by means of suitable mechanism provided for this purpose, the rods A of all the cars of the train will be revolved, and each pinion B, acting on the wheel 0, rotates the shaft D and winds the rope or chain E on the said shaft, thereby drawing the inner ends of the rods F F toward each other and pressing the brake-shoes G against the wheels with very great power. If the speed of the engine is suddenly checked, the ends of the'prongs L bump against the adjoining collars K, whereby one of the collars R will be pressed toward the fixed collar N, and thereby the spirally-twisted parts I revolve the collars K, and as the two adjoining collars are clutched together they will revolve, and will revolve one of the shafts or rods A, thereby applying the brakes.
The ends of the prongs L are beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the ends abut they will be guided sidewise to enter into the recesses or spaces between the prongs.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a car-brake, of the revolving rod or shaft A, carrying the pinion B, the crown-wheel C meshing therewith, the shaft D, revolved by the crown-wheel, and chains connecting shaft D with the brakes, as described, with the interchangeable clutches L on the shaft A, each adapted to engage with another like itself, as described, whereby the brake-rods of two cars meeting, either end first, will engage, for the purpose specified.
2. In a car-brake, the combination, with the revolving rod or shaft A, having spirallytwisted part I and head J on the end, of the pinion B, the crown-wheel O, the shaft D to which the brake-chains are fastened, the IO clutch-collars K, provided with prongs L and the springs M, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
