Description
Sept. 22, 1959 K. ROSS CLOTHES ROD END SUPPORTS Filed April 1, 1958 FIG/.3
KEARNEY ROSS INVENTOR.
United States Patent CLOTHES ROD END SUPPORTS Kearney Ross, Elmont, N.Y. Application April 1, 1958, Serial No. 725,630 2 Claims. (Cl. 248-264) This invention relates to improved end supports for a horizontally suspended clothes rod, and has as one of its principal objects to provide as these end supports similarly constructed members which are readily adapted to be uniformly mounted on their supporting members, and by virtue of being uniformly mounted thereby adapted to carry the clothes rod level.
In the usual arrangement of a clothes rod, the rod is suspended transversely of side supports or molding strips attached to each of the closet side walls, and is carried at each end by a support connected to each molding strip. In addition to the requirement that the molding strips be disposed in the same horizontal plane, under present practice with presently known supports, much care is additionally required in properly mounting the supports on each of the molding strips in a uniform manner so that they carry the clothes rod level.
It is thus one of the objects of the present invention to provide a support adapted by its construction to be mounted to its side support or molding strip in but one position, and by virtue of being so mounted, adapted to be in registration with another similarly constructed and mounted support.
A still further object is to provide a support of simplified construction readily produced at low unit cost.
To accomplish these and other objects, each support consists of a substantially fiat plate having a clearly defined upper and lower portion, of which the said lower portion by virtue of being relatively larger in width has lateral projections formed on each of its sides. When properly mounted on a molding strip, it is proposed that only the said upper portion of the support will rest flush against the side of a molding strip and that the said lower portion will extend below its bottom in a position to carry an end of the clothes rod.
Accordingly, the lateral side projections of the said lower portion are bent slightly rearward to thereby indicate when fitting flush against the bottom of the molding strip, this proposed mounting position for the support. Inasmuch as this said mounting position is uniform for each similarly constructed support, the clothes rod will thus be carried level in an installation consisting of two of these supports carrying each end of the clothes rod.
The clothes rod end supports of the present invention will be better understood when considered in connection with the accompanying specification and drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric perspective of a clothes rod in a horizontal and level suspended position.
Figure 2 is an exaggerated side view of one of the two similarly constructed end supports carrying the clothes rod in the position shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similarly exaggerated, but front view of the end support shown in Figure 2.
In Figure l, a clothes rod 1 is shown in a position of level suspension transversely of two spaced side supports or molding strips 2, each of which is attached in a conventional manner to a side wall 3 of a closet (one said wall only being shown). In addition to the requirement that the molding strips 2 lie in the same horizontal plane, which will be assumed for the installation shown in Figure 1, to so support this clothes rod 1 level, it is also required that each end support 4 for the said rod be mounted in a uniform manner on each of the molding strips 2. To this end, each end support 4, according to the present invention, is constructed alike, and by virtue of its construction is adapted to be mounted in but one position on a molding strip 2.
As most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3, each end support 4 consists of a substantially fiat plate characterized by a clearly defined upper and lower portion, designated 5 and 6 respectively, which differ from each other both as to intended functions and relative widths. More particularly, the upper or narrower plate portion 5, when properly mounted on a molding strip 2, is intended to be the only portion of the plate in contact with the said strip (being fastened flush against a side 7 thereof by suitable fastening means 8. The lower or wider plate portion 6, on the other hand, extends below the bottom 9 of the molding strip 2 in this said properly mounted position, and receives an end 10 of the clothes rod 1 through a hole 11 properly centered therein.
To accomplish mounting each support 4 in the manner just indicated, use is made of a lateral projection 12 formed on each side 13 of the lower plate portion 6 by its relatively larger width. More specifically, as clearly shown in Figure 3, each of these lateral side projections 12 are bent slightly rearward, and are thereby capable during mounting of each support 4, of indicating when fitting flush against the bottom 9 of a molding strip 2, the correct mounting position of the said support.
Thus, in an installation of two similar end supports 4, constructed in the manner hereinabove just described, the mounted position of each on a molding strip 2 will be uniform, thereby assuring that the centered holes 11 of each will be aligned, and that the clothes rod 1 disposed through these said holes will be carried level.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction for the clothes rod end support shown, but that wide modifications can be made thereto within the invention defined by the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In an end support for a clothes rod suspended transversely of two spaced molding strips lying in the same horizontal plane, a plate adapted to be fastened to a side of one of said molding strips and having a clearly defined upper and lower portion, of which, said lower portion has a relatively larger width forming lateral side projections thereon and is adapted to be the only portion of said plate extending below the bottom of said molding strip when properly mounted thereon, means on said lower plate portion for carrying an end of said clothes rod, and a rearward bend in said lateral side projections adapting them to indicate when fitting flush against the bottom of the molding strip the proper mounting position of said plate.
2. A pair of like end supports for a clothes rod suspended transversely of two spaced molding strips lying in the same horizontal plane, each support being comprised of a substantially flat plate having a clearly defined upper and lower portion, of which, the said lower portion is relatively larger in width to form a lateral projection on each side thereof, and each support being adapted to be mounted on a molding strip with only its upper plate portion flush against the inner side of this molding strip and its lower plate portion extended below the bottom thereof, an opening in each lower plate portion for receiving one end of said clothes rod, and a rearward bend in the lateral side projections of each lower plate portion dapting h m t d qat wh n fi ng fl h a ns th Bfisxsaqqe Qififi'; .ilw th s P n bottom of each molding strip the proper mounting posi- UNITED STATES PATENTS tion of each plate, which mounting position being uni- 5 06 ki J iqzm in; ea h P at mez b assures l nmen .s ro 1 633 5 gig r 1 5 a r mew 1 5 1 e and level s pe sm 9 .sa od lo h 2 2,779,010 Pit Jam 22, 1957
