Description
L. c. FRANK METHOD OF MOUNTING DECORATIVE INOIOIA Sept. 22, 1959 -Filed May 5, 1958 l. IP :f
IN VENTOR.
LEWIS C. FRANK @Aile/Quim TTORNEYS United States Patent O 2,904,918 METHOD OF MOUNTING DECORATIVE INDICIA Lewis Crown Frank, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Frank Plastics Corporation, Detroit, Mich.
Application May 5, 1958, Serial No. 732,855 1 Claim. (Cl. 41-34) This invention relates to a decorative indicia and a method for applying a decorative indicia to a base surface. More particularly, this invention relates to a means and method for applying indicia, such as in the forrn of letters, initials, numbers, etc., to a base surface, wherein the indicia are formed of a large quantity of minute slze particles arranged to form a substantially continuous, rough coating, ywith the particles being decorative and reflective to thereby glitter and reflect.
It is an object of this invention to provide the means and method wherein any unskilled person, such as a housewife, can apply decorative indicia to various items, such as packages, Wrapping paper, etc., simply and inexpensivel Tlese and other objects and advantages will become apparent upon reading the following description of which the attached drawings form a part.
With reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a View of the base element sheet with its cover sheets. I
Fig. 2 is a side view taken in the direction of arrow 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a fragment of the base element to show its cross-section.
Fig. 4 illustrates the indicia formed upon a base surface.
Fig. 5 is a view taken in the direction of Fig. 4.
With reference first, to Figs. 4 and 5, the object herein is to apply a decorative, bright, glittering indicia to a base sheet 11. The base sheet may be a wrapping for a package, such as a Christmas present package or the like, or may be any other object.
The indicia is formed of two elements, base element 12 and coating element 13. Each will be separately described below.
As shown in Figs. l to 3, base element 12, consists of a flat sheet 15, which has a front face and a rear face, both faces being coated with a continuous coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive. The sheet 15 is pre-cut into a predetermined indicia shape. The opposite faces of the sheet 15 are covered with cover sheets 17. Cover sheets 17 are formed to be peeled or to be stripped away from the adhesive coating, which then remains upon the sheet 15.
This type of double faced, adhesive coated sheet with cover sheets thereon, is conventional and is readily available commercially. Thus, being well known to those of arrows 5-5 "ice skilled in the art, no further description of the particular adhesive or cover sheets need be given here.
The method herein consists broadly of the following steps: First, the double adhesive faced base sheet with its cover strips or sheets are pre-cut into predetermined indicia shapes. These shapes may be in the form of letters, or simple figures, such as a Christmas tree or the like, and may be sold in that form.
When it is desired to apply an indicia to a base surface, the cover strip 17 on the back face is stripped olf and that face is adhered to the base surface.
Thereafter, the coating element is applied. The coating element, consists of a large number of tiny size, metal or metal-like particles 20. The particles are preferably of a reflective type of metal chopped into small particles, and which glitter and reect light.
To apply the particles, the cover sheet on the front face of the sheet 15 is peeled away, and thereafter, a large quantity of the particles is poured upon the sheet 15 and the base surface. A large quantity of the particles will adhere to the front face adhesive to form a substantially continuous, rough coating, comprising a large number of tiny particles arranged close together.
The base surface may then be tipped or turned over to remove all the excess particles which did not adhere to the adhesive.
With this method, the particles completely cover the front face adhesive and conform to the sharp edges of the indicia.
This invention may be further developed within the scope of the following attached claim. Accordingly, it is desired that the foregoing description be read as being merely illustrative of an operative embodiment of this invention and not in a strictly limiting sense.
I now claim.
A method for applying indicia to a mounting surface consisting of pre-cutting into the shape of a predetermined indicia a at sheet which is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive on each of its faces, the adhesive coated faces being covered with a removable cover sheet; removing the cover sheet from one face and pressing that face against the mounting surface for adhering thereto; removing the other cover sheet to expose the other face; then applying a large quantity of small sized decorative, metal-like particles upon the exposed adhesive covered face and upon the mounting surface adjacent to the exposed face to adhere the particles to the exposed face and its edges and form a substantially continuous coating of particles upon the front face with the coating being in the shape of the desired indicia; and finally removing those excess particles which did not adhere.
