Description

UNTTED STATES ATENT FFICEQ SAMUEL LANDER, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY OIL-TAN K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 290,438, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed November 9, 1883. (l\o modeL.
vice for the filling-tube and for the faucet and vent attachment for submerged oil-tanks, contrived to effectually protect the filling-tube,
faucet, and vent from fire and from danger of being struck by lightning, for greater safety in storing oil an d otherinflammable substances as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of an oiltank and its submerged cistern contrived according to my invention for the pro tection of the oil, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the cistern and tank.
I make the oil-tank a cylindrical in crosssection for the most part, but with a flat bottom, 1), and submerge it in water in a cistern, (1, of masonry, locatedin any position enabling the oil to be drawn out through a faucet, e, at the bottom of the tank, and having acover, f, wholly inclosing the tank, except a fillingtube. 9, which extends up through the cover f sufficiently to enable the tank to be filled properly. To this tube, and over the cover h, commonly used for closing it, I apply a glass or other non-conducting cover, 1 of sufficient length to extend down through the cisterncover f and into the water, for an effectual means of preventing fire heat from effecting the filling-tube, or any oil or vapor of oil therein, in case of fires occurring near the tank and of preventing the metal of the tube and its cover from being struck by lighting, and over the emptying-faucet e, I build an arch, j,
with which I provide a door, 70, to protect the faucet from fire, and I connect the vent-passage Z with a faucet, m, also located in this inclosure for protection, the vent-pipe a, forming the said connection, being arranged in the Water-space.
To prevent the tank from being floated by the water when empty, I connect it with the walls of the cistern by holding-down braces o. The cistern may be of large size, to contain any number of tanks, according to the capacity required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination of a nonconducting cover. 1, with the filling-tube of a submerged oil-tank, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a non conducting cover, t', with a submerged and inclosed oiltank, said cover extending through the cover f of the inclosure and into the water, substantially as described' 3. The combination of a protecting-inclosure with the emptying-faucet e of a submerged
