FREDERICK E. PERKINS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
FAGOT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,264, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed April 2, 1883. (No modcLl To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIcKE. PERKINS, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Fagot-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with they drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Sheet 1: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Sheet 2: Fig. 2 is an elevation of same with box open, showing fagot and plunger. Fig. 3 is a top view of the upper framework of the open box. Fig. 4 is a top View of the lower portion of the open box, with upper portion removed. Sheet 3: Fig. 5 illustrates the system of using and operating my invention, showing track, turntable, elevated bench, scales, &c. Fig. 6-shows an elevation of the table or bench and scales. Fig. 7 is a side View of the bottom of the press. Fig. 8 shows a fagot after coming from the box.
The object of my invention is to produce a box for fagoting hoop, scrap iron and steel, and other metals which are to be subsequently heated and rerolled; and it consists in the device for that purpose hereinafter described.
I construct my fagot-box vertically in two sections, A and B, which may be opened in dependently of each other, but which, when closed, form asingle box the surfaces of whose interior sides are in the same perpendicular. The upper section, A, has two doors, 0 D, of which one is hinged at the corner, while the other is attached to the supportingbars E F. The bars E F are hinged to the side bars, G H, at one end, and, when the doors are closed, locked at the other withother bars, I J, and se cured by cam-latches K L. The doors of the lower section, B, arehinged and secured, when closed, in substantially the same manner as the doors of the upper section, A, there being a slight difference in the construction of the hinges, whereby the doors, which are of greater thickness than the upper ones, are made to swing out of the way when opened. The lower section, B, is constructed with aseries of corresponding slots or spaces, M, in its front and back sides, which extend through the same. The whole is mounted upon wheels N, and runs upon rails O O.
P, Fig. 5, is a continuous bench, having its top at about the height of a persons waist,
] and at suitable intervals recesses Q, in each of which is placed a pair of scales, R. Connected with a turn-table, a, by a track is a bed-plate. S, upon which the fagot-box stands while the pressure is exerted upon its contents.
Commencing with the fagot-box empty and upon the turn-table a, the operation of my invention is as follows: The box is wheeled over the track until it enters the recess Qand stands upon the scales R. The doors of the upper section, A, are opened, and the workman, with scraps from the bench P, fills the lower section, B, of the box, after which he closes and secures the upper doors and fills the upper section, A, as shown in Fig. 1, the scales informing him when he has put in the requisite wheeled over the track to the bed-plate S and under. a plunger, T, as shown in Fig. 2, which is caused to descend by suitable mechanism, and forces the scraps into the bottom of the box. WVhen the scraps are sufliciently compressed, as shown in Fig. 2, the further downward movement of the plunger is arrested. The face of the plunger T is provided with a series of cross grooves or slots, 1), which correspond to the grooves or slots in the bottom of the box. The straps or binders, having upon' one end suitable ties, are placed in the grooves c, to which access is obtained through the slots M by the workman at the front of the box, and theopposite ends are turned up and passed back through the grooves b in the plunger T by the workman upon the back side of the box, when I the two ends are secured by the first-mentioned workman by means of the ties, as will be readily understood. The scraps'having now been secured in a bale, the machinery is reversed, and the plunger T commences to travel upward, when the doors of both the upper and lower sections of the box are opened, as shown in Fig. 2, the bale removed, and the box again wheeled to the scales to be filled, and the same operation repeated. The sides of the box, near the bottom, are slightly recessed upon the inside at d d, to facilitate the removal of the bale after it has been securely bound. The rails near the bed-plate S are so arranged that they will spring down during the continuance of the tom of the box to rest upon the bars e upon l the bed-plate. The chamber which receives pressure of the plunger, and permit the botquantity. As soon as the box is filled it is and holds the scrap is slightly longer upon the front side, which prevents the iron from be coming wedged, and permits the bale to be easily removed after the doors are opened.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A fagot-box for containing scraps and holding them during pressure, formed of two vertical sections arranged one above the other, and each provided with doors which open outwardly and independently of the doors of the other section, substantially as set forth.
2. A fagot-box having the lower portion formed with openings M, and provided with Vitnesses:
