Description

A. NELSON ADJUSTABLE BATH BRUSH Filed June 10, 1958 I N VEN TOR.
' ATTORNEYS I Sept. 1, 1959 L-i-L United States Patent a assists Patented Sept. 1, 1959 2,901,760 ADJUSTABLE BATH BRUSH Antonio Nelson, Oakland, Calif. Application dune 10, 1958, Serial No. 741,106 3 Claims. (Cl. 15-160) This invention relates to an adjustable bath brush or body massaging assembly.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bath brush which includes a frame piece that is adapted to be connected to a suitable supporting structure such as a bathroom wall, and wherein there is provided an adjustable brush or scrubbing element which is releasably or adjustably fastened to the frame piece so that a person can conveniently rub a desired portion of his or her body against the brush or other element so as to facilitate the cleaning or scrubbing or massaging of parts of the body which are ordinarily difiicult to reach.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bath brush or massaging element which includes a brush that can be moved up or down so that the user can position the brush at the desired elevation or location, and the brush of the present invention being especially suitable for use in conjunction with a shower, bathtub or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bath brush which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view illustrating the adjustable bath brush of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the adjustable bath brush.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing the parts disassembled.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional View taken through the frame on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 with the movable base which carries the body engaging member removed.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4 through the movable base which carries the body engaging member.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the latch for retaining the base and body engaging member immobile in their adjusted positions, and Figure 7 being taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the adjustable bath brush assembly of the present invention, and it will be seen that the numeral 11 designates a stationary frame member or piece which is adapted to be fastened to a suitable supporting structure such as a bathroom wall 12, by means of securing elements 13. The frame 11 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel longitudinally extending shoulders 14, and each shoulder 14 has a longitudinally extending groove 15 therein. The numeral 16 indicates each of a plurality of spaced apart indentations or sockets which are arranged in the shoulders 14, and the indentations 16 communicate with the grooves 15.
view taken on the There is further provided an adjustable base which is indicated generally by the numeral 17, and the base 17 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel tongues 18. Each tongue 18 has its outer portion enlarged as at 19, and the enlarged portions 19 are slidably mounted in the grooves 15.
There is further provided a latch which is indicated generally by the numeral 20, Figure 7, and the latch 21 is adapted to be used for maintaining the base 17 immobile in its adjusted or desired positions on the frame 11. The latch 20 includes a lever 21 which is hingedly connected to the base 17 by means of a hinge 22. A coil spring 23 is provided for normally urging the lever 21 to the position shown in Figure 7, and a finger 24 is carried by the lever 21, the finger 24 being mounted for movement into and out of engagement with the indentations 16. By manually pressing on the lever 21, the coil spring 23 can be compressed so that the finger 24 can move out of the corresponding indentation 16 whereby the base 17 is free to move up and down on the frame 11. Then, when pressure is released on the lever 21, the spring 23 will again urge the finger 24 into the desired recess or indentation 16 so as to hold the base 17 immobile in its desired or adjusted position.
The base 17 is further provided with a rectangular recess or opening 25, and the numeral 26 indicates a body engaging member which is releasably held or positioned in the recess 25. As shown in the drawings, the body engaging member 26 comprises a support member 27 which is arranged in the recess 25, and a plurality of bristles 28 extend from the support member 27 and are secured thereto in any suitable manner. The numeral 29 indicates a finger engaging tab which extends from the support member 27 whereby the tab 29 can be used for detaching or removing the member 26 from the opening 25, as for example when a different or replacement member 26 is to be mounted in the base 17.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a device which is especially suitable for use in scrubbing or washing portions of a persons body such as the back which is ordinarily hard to reach. In use, the frame 11 is adapted to be attached to a suitable supporting structure such as a bathroom wall, by means of the securing elements or screws 13, and these securing elements 13 can extend into the supporting structure such as the supporting structure 12. Then, with the device 10 arranged contiguous to a tub or shower, it will be seen that a person can rub against the member 26 so that the back or other portions of the persons body can be readily scrubbed or massaged and it is to be noted that the grooves 15 have a substantially rounded formation for coaction with the rounded portions 19, so that with the portions 19 seated in the grooves 15, the base 17 cannot Work loose accidentally from the frame 11. In other words, the ends of the grooves 15 are open adjacent each end of the frame 11 so that initially the base 17 can be moved or positioned so that the portions 19 can be slipped into the ends of the grooves 15. Thus, the portions 19 and grooves 15 interfit or coact so that the base 17 can slide up and down on the frame 11, but nevertheless accidental separation of these parts is prevented.
It is to be noted that the latch 20 can be manually actuated when the base 17 which carries the member 26 is to be shifted to a different location. To actuate or release the latch 20, it is only necessary to manually move the lever 21 so that the pin 24- can move out of the corresponding indentation 16 whereby the base 17 is free to shift or move. This arrangement is especially suitable when it is desired to shift the member 26 to difierent 'locations for engaging different portions of the body, as for example when tall or short persons are to use the device a or when a person wishes to scrub or massage the upper or lower portions of the back or the like.
The base 17 is provided with a drainage opening or hole 3! whereby soapy water or the like can drain therethrough, Figure 6.
The parts can be made of any suitable material and in different shapes or sizes.
While bristles 28 have been illustrated in. the present drawings, it is to be understood that other members such as sponges, plastic members or the like can be substituted or utilized instead of the bristles 28. The finger engaging tab 29 provides a means whereby the member 26 can be readily pulled loose from the base 17 as for example when this member becomes worn out or when this member is to be replaced for any reason.
The device may be made in attractive colors and may have an attractive appearance so that it will blend harmoniously with the various fixtures in a bathroom or the like. The grooves 15 are in the form of female members which serve to receive the male members 19 so as to prevent the base 17 from accidental-Ly separating from the frame.
The present invention is especially suitable for use in a shower bath since it permits that portion of a persons back to be reached which cannot be reached with the hands or arms. By adjusting the device, a person will be able to give himself or herself a pleasant scrub and a good wash without the use of the hands while taking a shower. The device will occupy a minimum amount of space and will not detract from the appearance of the bathroom. The member 26 may be made so that it is reversible whereby when one side becomes worn out the other side can be exposed or used. Other materials that can be used in place of the bristles 28 are sponges, rubber members, cloth members or the like.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
