The section 11-is provided with

52 and 53 and on this portion ends of the shaft are upset or riveted over providing heads 54 and 5S that prevent accidental separation of the wheels from the shaft.

The heel portion or section 11 of the platform of the skate is also provided with a depending flange 56 which is provided with a beveled edge 57 providing a scraping portion 58 that forms a heel stop or brake to limit forward movement of the skate when a quick stop is necessary. The portion 11 is also provided with heel locating lugs 59 and 60 that are positioned inside of the slots 23 through which the strap 22 extends and with the heel positioned against the lugs 59 and'60 the end 61 of the key or `strap is drawn through the slot 26 and by pulling on the end 61 the teeth 62 are drawn through. the slot 26 until the strap is tight around the ankle of a foot on which the skate is positioned.

The heel portion 11 is also provided with a slot or opening 63, which like the opening 41 in the toe portion reduces the weight of the platform of the skate.

The skate may be provided in different sizes and with the parts designed and assembled as illustrated and describe the toe of a shoe may be placed in the forward end of a skate below the strap or key 17 and with the toe secured in position the heel is placed against the lugs 59 and 60 and secured in position by the heel strap 22 the key portion 61 of which is inserted through the yslot 26 and drawn tight securing the heel portion of the platform of the skate to the ankle or rear portion of the shoe or foot of a wearer. Should wear develop in the parts the keys may be drawn through the slots to take up play or slack so that the skates are readily retained in fitted positions continuously during use.

The shield 12 not only provides a protector for the toe of a shoe, but also changes the appearance of the skate providing an armoured effect that is distinctive.

It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A roller skate comprising a platform having toe and heel sections, means for adjustably connecting the sections of the platform, rollers mounted on the heel and toe sections of the platform, a shield, U-shaped in plan mounted on the toe section of the platform, said shield having a projection at the forward end providing a toe stop and also having slots extended through side walls thereof, a key having notches in the edges extended through the slots in the side walls of the shield, a heel strap extended from the heel section of the platform, one end of the heel strap having a slot therein and the opposite end having notches in the edges positioned to coact with the slot for securing the ends together, and a heel stop depending from the outer end of the heel section of the platform.

In a roller skate, the combination which comprises a platform having toe and heel sections, means for adjustably connecting the toe and heel sections of the platform, rollers mounted on the sections of the platform, a U-shaped shield extended around the toe section of the platform and having an inclined leading surface with the lower edge extended downwardly providing a toe stop, said shield having vertically disposed slots extended through side walls thereof, a key having notches in the edges extended through the slots of the side walls of the shield providing holding means for the toe of a shoe on the toe section of the platform of the skate, the heel section having heel lugs extended upwardly therefrom and a depending flange providing a heel stop on the outer end, and a heel strap extended through the heel section and having a slot in one end and notches in edges of the opposite end whereby with the end having the notches therein extended through the slot the strap secures the heel section off the skate to a shoe or a foot of a wearer.

In a roller skate, the combination which comprises a platform having toe and heel sections', the sections being slidably connected, means for clamping the sections in adjusted positions, shafts mounted in bearings depending from the toe and heel sections of the platform, rollers positioned on the shafts, a plate, U-shaped in plan providing a shield extended around the toe section of the platform, means for securing the shield to the toe section of the platform, the forward end of the shield being inclined rearwardly from the lower end and having a depending ange providing a toe stop at the forward end, said shield also having a web extended across the upper surface and vertically disposed slots in side walls thereof, a strap having notches in the edges extended through the slots in the side walls of the shield for retaining the toe of a shoe on the toe section of the platform of the skate, the heel section of the platform having a depending flange with a sharp edge on the lower portion providing a heel stop, said heel section also having heel lugs extended upwardly from the upper surface and slots therethrough, and a heel strap extended through the slots in the heel section of the platform, the heel strap having a T-shaped slot in one end and notches in the edges of the opposite end whereby with the end having the notches in the edges `thereof extended through the T-shaped slot of the other end the heel of the skate may be rigidly secured to the ankle of a foot the toe portion of which is secured below the strap extended through the slots in the side walls of the shield.

4. A roller skate comprising a platform having toe and heel sections, means for adjustably connecting the sections, pairs of wheels mounted on the sections, a shield U-shaped in plan, having side walls with slots in upper portions connected by an inclined forward end, mounted on the toe section of the platform, a strap having spaced `notches in edges thereof extended through the slots in side walls of the shield, said slots being positioned at the ball of a foot in a shoe in the shield and being spaced above the platform a distance less than the height of the shoe whereby the shoe is gripped by the strap extended through the slots for securing the toe of a shoe in the shield and upon the platform, and a heel strap mounted in the heel section of the platform and having a T- shaped head on one end with a slot and notches in the sides of the opposite end positioned to receive the T- shaped head for securing the heel of the shoe in position on the platform.
