This invention relates to safety razors and is directed particularly to a blade ejecting mechanism for safety razors of the type using double-edge blades and selfclosing operation, such as disclosed, for example, in my PPatent No. 2,775,031, issued December 25, 1956.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved self-closing safety razor of the character described having mechanism for automatically ejecting a used blade.
Another object is to provide a safety razor ofthe above nature wherein the ejecting mechanism also serves as a platform for gently lowering a new blade in proper position on the razor frame base.
Another object is to provide a safety razor of the above nature wherein the ejecting mechanism comprises four corner lugs operative to move the blade upwardly from the frame base under manual control of the operator, whereby the blade can readily be flushed on each side for cleaning without the necessity of removing it from the razor.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings, wherein like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Fig. 1 is a top View of a self-closing safety razor embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a partial vertical cross-sectional view of the safety razor shown in Fig. 1, taken along the line 2 2 thereof in the direction of the arrows, and shown with a blade in place and ready for shaving,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2 but showing the blade lifting and ejecting mechanism partially actuated,
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that of Fig. 3, showing the blade lifting and ejecting mechanism in fully actuated condition, and
Fig. 5 is a top view of the safety razor embodying the invention shown in fully open or actuated condition.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral designates a handle tube formed with a reduced diameter upper end portion 11. Attached to the upper extremity of the upper end portion 11 of the handle is a generally rectangular frame base 12 having outer surface portions 35 upon which a razor blade seats and which is preferably stamped of sheet metal and formed with opposed lateral inclined portions 13 and 14. The upper extremity of the end portion 11 of the tubular handle 10 extends through a central opening 36 in the frame base 12 at the point of attachment thereto. The outer ends of the inclined portions 13 and 14 of the frame base 12 are integrally formed with short, out- Wardly-extending portions 15 and 16, respectively, which terminate in downwardly-extending portions 17 and 18, respectively which ride against the face of the person to be shaved.
Slidably arranged within the reduced diameter upper end portion of the handle tube 10 is a push-rod 19 having a bifurcated upper end 20 fixed to which is a blade centering bar 21 lwhich moves with said push rod. The blade centering bar 21 is connected at one end to a transverse end link 22 and at the other end to a transverse end link 23. A pair of opposed clamp plates 24, 25 are swingably arranged at each side of the razor head, each plate having opposed, depending lever end portions 26, 27 pivoted centrally along their length on pivot lugs 28, 29 of the end links 22, 23. To this end, the depending end portions 26, 27 are provided with small openings at their pivot points through which the pivot lugs of the end links 22, 23 extend. The ends of the frame base 12 are formed with cut-out portions 30, 31 to allow nnimpeded upward travel of the lever end portions 26, 27 when the safety razor is actuated for blade ejection in the manner hereinafter described.
Each of the lever end portions 26, 27 of the clamp plates 24, 25 is provided centrally along its length with an integrally formed outwardly and then inwardly projecting lug 32 whichwh`en the razor is in closed condition, is disposed in spaced aligned position below the end of its respective outwardly-extending portions 15, 16 of the frame base 12 (see Fig. 2). When the safety razor is actuated by pushing upwardly on the thumb-controlled slide 33, the push-rod 19 together with the blade centering bar 21 and its end links 22, 23 will be moved upwardly, carrying along the clamp plates 24, 25 to the position shown in Fig. 3 where the lugs 32 will contact the undersurface at the ends of the outwardly-extending portions 15, 16 of the frame base 12. Continued upward movement of the push-rod 19 will thns cause the clamp plates 24, 2S to tbe pivoted about their respective pivot lugs 28, 29 to the fully open or actuated position illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the cut out portions 30, 31 of the frame base 12 allowing passage of the lever end portions 26, 27. The lower ends of the lever end portions 26, 27 are formed with right-angular inwardly-projecting portions 34 (Figs. 2, 3) which further elevate the blade B when the razor is in fully actuated position, as can be seen in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that the spring; biased mechanism for normally holding the razor in closed condition to be actuated by the thumb slide 33, though not illustrated in detail herein, may be of any well-known construction. In operation, if the slide mechanism is quickly actuated the blade B will be lifted from its seat by the projecting portions 34 of the lever end portions 26, 27 with such impact as to propel the blade B off the blade centering bar 21 and eject it from` the razor without the necessity of touching it. If the razor is actuated slowly, the blade B will be lifted to the position shown in Fig. 4 where it may be readily rinsed on each side without removal. In inserting the blade, it will be dropped in place with the razor in fully actuated condition as illustrated in Fig. 4, whereupon continued automatic downward movement of the blade on the platform formed by the projecting portions 34 upon allowing the razor to fully close to the position shown in Fig. 2 will cause the blade to seat evenly on the frame base 12.
While I have described and illustrated herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is presented by way of illustration only, and that various omissions, or changes in the arrangement of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalent elements for those herein shown and described, can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the following claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a blade ejecting safety razor, the combination comprising an elongated handle, a frame base member secured at one end of said handle and having an 3 outer surface for seating one side of a double-edge razor blade, a push-rod axially arranged in said handle and extending through a central opening in said frame base member, a blade-centering bar secured to the projecting end of said push-rod, a link member xed cross-wise at each end of said blade-centering bar, a blade clamp plate arranged at each side of said blade centering bar in spaced parallel relation to the outer ksurface of said frame base member, the ends of said clampV plates each having right-angularly projecting lever portions, means pivoting intermediate portions of said lever portions with the ends of said link members, means for rotating said lever portions about their pivot points upon upward move-ment of said push-rod to swing said clamp plates into open position away from said frame base member, and abutment means at the outer extremities of said lever portions operative to contact a razor blade when said clamp plates are moved into open position and lift the l a push-rod axially arranged in said handle and extending through a central opening in said frame base member, a blade-centering bar secured to the projecting end of said push-rod, a link member xed cross-wise at each end of said blade-centering bar, a blade clamp plate arranged at each side of said blade centering bar in spaced parallel relation to the outer surface of said frame ibase member, the end of said clamp plates each having rightangularly projecting lever portions, means pivoting intermediate portions of said lever portions with the ends of said link members, means for rotating said lever portions about their pivot points upon upward movement of said pushrod to swingsaid clamp plates into open position away from said frame base member, and abutment means at the outer extremities of said lever portions operative to Contact a razor blade when said clamp plates are moved into open position and lift the blade away from isa-id frame base member, said abutment meansvcomprising right-singularly projecting lug portions-extending from said outer extremities of said levers.
