This invention relates to a safety razor of the type employing a sectional cap in combination with a guard or other blade-supporting member.
It is in general the broad object of the present invention to improve the accuracy and speed of the blade-clamping and releasing operation, and to facilitate convenient manipulation of the razor by the user.
In using safety razors of this general type, it has been usual heretofore to effect the blade clamping operation by manipulation of a handle member threaded or provided with a spiral or inclined cam surface, designed to impart a clamping movement to the sectional cap when the handle member is turned by the user. As distinguished from such prior construction, the present invention contemplates cap sections which are arranged to be moved into clamping position initially by a simple downward pull upon the handle or manipulating member, the latter being thereafter turned less than a quarter turn to secure the blades in position and under the desired tension. When it is desired to open the razor, a twist of the handle releases the lock provided upon the cap sections, which are then moved into open position under the bias of a spring.
VCertain important advantages are inherent in a structure of this character. For example, the
closing movement of the razor can be effectedY very quickly and under very sensitive control. Further, the razor is readily opened and one familiar with the razor can achieve this with one hand, leaving the other hand free to remove the used blade and insert another. It is vtherefore an important feature of the invention to provide a safety razor having sectional cap members in combination with a spring, tending at all times to move the cap members into open position in combination with mechanism under the control of the user for opening and closing the cap sections with a minimum .of movement and for controlling the action of the spring. In the razor shown asy embodying the present invention, the razor is so organized that a single spring controls the pivotal movement of the cap sections to open position-, as well as their joint movement toward closed position for clamping the blade and imparting a. transverse curvature to the blade.

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention the guard I IJ is utilized as a blade-v supporting member for shaping the blade when it is clamped in shaving position. The guard I0 is readily constructed of heavy sheet metal and p is provided along its longitudinal edges with a guard rail II of the usual construction. It Vcan be formed by die-pressing and bending a single blank and is provided with an elongated'de-J pressed recess or chamberA I2 of diamond-shaped contour and this chamber is bounded labout its upper margin by outwardly eXtendingcOnVex blade supporting faces. The guard is provided centrally at each end with a slotted opening 45' through the wall of the chamber I2 to permit the passage of the opposite terminal ends 2| of the bar I9 to be presently described. It is also provided adjacent each corner with a'rectangular opening or notch I3 to permit the free passage of the cap section arms 25.
The guard IIJ is rigidly connected to a tubular head III, as is shown in Figure 2, the inner end of the head I4 being spun or riveted to ll a counter-sunk opening in the bottom of the recess I2. The head is shouldered near its lower end` to receive the handle barrel I5. Within the barrel is disposed a spindle I8 threaded at its purpose of holding the cap lower end into a cylindrical plunger 28 which is mounted within a cap 20 rotatably mounted upon and closing the lower end of the handle barrel I5.
In the upper end of the spindle I8 is mounted the downwardly extending stem of the cross bar I9. The bar is made by longitudinally folding a sheet metal blank and its opposite ends 2l are offset downwardly and pass out through the slots in the ends ofthe recess I2 of the guard V(see Figure 4 in Patent 2,043,124 for a detailed showlng of a suitable bar). The offset ends of bar I9 terminate in outwardly extending transverse arms 22 which extend across the ends of the guard and are movable freely up and down with the bar IS and its spindle I8 and independently of the guard.
In Figure 3 is shown a typical form of blade 23 suitable for use in the razor of my invention. It is of well-known form and is provided with a central longitudinally extending blade-locating slot designed to fit accurately upon the bal I9 and has reentrant recesses in each corner which define an elongated unsharpened centrally disposed portion at each end of the longitudinal edgesfor shaving and the slot may be provided with spaced transverse enlargement for the reception of blade-locating studs of various shapes in other safety razors; one can refer to Figure 4 in the aforementioned patent for a showing of Such a blade.
The transverse arms 22 of the bar I9 are located beneath the elongated ends of the blade 23 and act to lift the blade and move it above the blade-engaging face of the guard when the barY I9 and the .carrier structure associated therewith is moved upwardly.
The cap sections 24 are transversely concave in contour and cooperate with the guard I in imparting a transverse curvature to the blade when the latter is clamped in shaving position. Each cap section 24 is kprovided at each of its outer corners with a downwardly extending bell crank 25 having arms 26 and 26, each bell crank being pivoted as at 46 to the outwardly extending arms 22 of the carrier bar I9. Arm 20 of each bell crank 25 is connected to a cap section 24 and is adapted to pass downwardly through one of the recesses I3 in the corners of the guard. Each bell crank includes intermediate its ends a semi-circular cam 36 which cooperates with the stationary shoulder of the guard adjacent the recess I3 when the carrier is raised to swing thecap sections into open position as the carrier is moved upwardly. In this movement the arms 26-swing outwardly into substantially horizontal position, as shown in Figure 3 and the cap sections rest upon the guards II, the arms 26 extending almost verticaly in this position of the cap sections. In the downward movement of the carrier bar I9, the pivots 46 of the arms 25 being moved past the walls of the recesses I3, the arms 26 are swung upwardly and the cap sections movedk toward their closed position, the arms 26 turning and passing endwise through the notches I3.
Spindle I8 and associated parts arenormally urged upwardly by a flat leaf spring 29 (Figure 4) having an aperture 36 thereinthrough which the stem-of the bar I9 passes; this spring is shown in Figure 4 and includes opposite fingers 3l which ride against the underside vof bar I9. The spring includes abase v32 from which fingers 3|- extend. `thebase being generally of such configuration that it ts snugly in the diamondshape recess or chamber I2.
The end of handle barrel I5 is provided with two like cams 36, these being separated by slots 3l on each side of the handle barrel. A pin 38 is extended through the cap 26 after plunger is threaded in the spindle I8. Spring 29 serves as an actuating member to move the spindle I8 and carrier I9 upwardly when permitted so to do.
`When the razor is to be opened to permit the removal of the blade for purpose of cleaning or replacement, the user turns the cap 26 as between the thumb and forefinger to release the locking engagement of the pin and the cams.

I claim: 1. A safety razor comprising a v.guard having a tubular handle secured thereto, a carrier having a pair of cap sections pivotally mounted thereon and a stem extending into said handle, aspring mounted between the guard and the car-l rier and tending at all times to move the cap sections into open position with respect to the guard, a cap threadedly engaged with said stem and rotatably mounted on an end of said handle, a slot in the end of said tubular handle dividing the said end into two separate earns, each including a first and a second cam portion, the rst cam portion extending ciroumferentially of said handle and axially of said handle away from said guard, the second cam portion extending circumferentially of said handle and continuing the rst cam axially toward said guard from that portion of the first cam furtherest from said guard, a pin extending from said cap into said slot movable upon .emergence from said slot first over said first cam and then over the second cam Vto lock the cap sections in a desired position.

carrier fha-ving a bar extending across said member and spaced therefrom, a pair of cap sections pivotally mounted on the bar, a stem extending from said bar slidably into said handle, a single :fiat leaf spring fitting said recess and having opposite ends thereon engaging the under side ofthe bar to bias the carrier to swing the cap sections into open position, and means for moving lthe stem axially of said handle to swing f the cap sections to closed position.
4. A safety razor comprising a blade supporting member; having a recess therein and a tubular handle secured thereto at one end thereof, a carrier having a bar extending across said member and spaced therefrom, a pair of cap sections pivotally mounted on the bar, a stem extending from said bar slidably into said handle, a flat leaf spring tting said recess and having opposite ends thereon engaging the 4under side of the barfto bias the carrier to swing the cap sections into open position, a cap threadedly engaged with said stem and rotatably mounted on the other end of said handle, a cam formed on said other end of said handle and having a face thereon extending circumferentially of said handle and axially of said handle away from said carrier, a slot extending longitudinally of said handle and dening terminal ends of said cam, and a pin extending from said cap to moveV in said slot and movable over said cam to open and lock close said cap sections.
5. A safety razor comprising a guard having a tubular handle secured thereto, a carrier having a. pair of cap sections pivotally mounted thereon and a stern extending into said handle, a ilat leaf spring mounted between the guard and the carrier and tending at all times to move the cap sections into open position with respect to the guard, a cap threadedly engaged with said stem and rotatably mounted on an end of said handle, a slot in the end of said tubular handle, a rst and a second cam cooperatively adjacent said slot, the first cam extending circumferentially of said handle and axially of said handle away from said guard, the second cam extending circumferentially of said handle and continuing the first cam axially toward said guard from that portion of the first cam furtherest from said guard, a pin extending from said cap into said slot movable upon emergency from said slot first over said first cam and then over the second cam to lock the cap sections in a desired position.
6. A safety razor comprising a blade supporting member having a recess therein and a tubular handle secured thereto at one end thereof, a carrier having a bar extending across said member and spaced therefrom, a pair of cap sections pivotally mounted on the bar, a stem extending from said bar slidably into said handle, a fiat leaf spring tting said recess in the blade supporting member and having opposite ends thereon engaging the underside of the bar to bias the carrier to swing the cap sections into open position, a cap threadedly engaged with said stem and rotatably mounted on the other end of said handle, a cam formed on said other end of said handle and having a face thereon extending circumferentially of said handle and axially of said handle away from said carrier, a slot extending longitudinally of said handle and defining the terminal ends of said cam, and a pin extending from said cap to move in said slot and movable over said cam to open and lock close said cap sections.
