No. 289,786. Patentedv Dec.'4, l1883.

' UNITE STATES WILLIAM M. TAYLOR AND IRA I). MERRILL, OF PARSONS, KANSAS, SAID MERRILL ASSIGNOR TO SAID TAYLOR.
CHURN.`
SPECIFICATION forming part Aof Letters Patent-No. 289,786, dated December 4, 1883. Application filed June21,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
n Be it known that we, XVILLIAM M. TAYLOR and IRA P. MERRILL, of Parsons, ,in l the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvevments in Ohurns; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved churn, the cover moved and part of the casing broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rotary cyl! Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 4. is a detailviewof one of the bearings.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. A
Our invention has relation sto churns adapted to be used also as washing-machines;
and it consists in the construction and combi! nation of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, lA is the outer casing or box, in one end of which.Y is fastened the bridge-piece B, which forms a bearing for the drive-shaft C. The latter has a crank, D, for turning it, and upon it is keyed. or otherwise fastened the drive-wheel E, which meshes with the pinion F. In opposite ends of the box are arranged vertical cleats, forming ways (shown yat G G) for the insertion of the removable bearings H H, one of which forms a bearing for the outer end of the drive-shaft C. By lifting the bearings H out of their respective ways G, and removing the bridge-piece B, the inside cylinder, with its driving-gear and other appurtenances, may be removed from the box. This inside cylinder, consists of two heads, I, of circular shape, and slotted, as shown at J,
the wings K, formed by said slots, being bent in an outward direction, so as to form outwardly-flaring blades, as will appear more clearly byreference to Fig. 2 ofthe drawhaving been vre-r form or come7 very rapidly.
ings. The heads I I are connected by slender rods or wires'L, andthe cylinder is provided with a hinged door, bymeans of which access may readily be had to lthe inside. When in use, the boxfor casing A is covered by an arched cover N.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the use and operation of our combined churn and washingmachine will readily be understood. When used as a churn, the cream is placed in the box, after which the cover is placed in position, and by turning the crank the inside cylinder is made to revolve rapidly, thus effectuallyv stirring and breaking the cream. As the outwardly-flaring wings or blades K cut through the cream, this is forced into the cylkinder from opposite directions, as indicated by the arrows, thus forming currents, which meet in the center ofthe 'cylinder and ef- `fectually break up thebulk or `body of the cream, which causes the kbutter-globules to when formed, can readily betaken out of the box by removing the cylinder and its driving-gear, which, as already stated, is done by vliftingthe bearings H out of their respective ways.
' W'hen the apparatus is to be used as a wash` ing-linachine, the articles to be washed are placed inside of the cylinder through the door, and the box is partially filled with hot water and suds, after which the cover is placed in position. The cylinder is then rotated as before, which will-force the hotsuds into the vcylinder from opposite directions, causing them to thoroughly permeate the clothes, and effectually remove all dirt, after which they are rinsed out in the usual manner.
We are aware that churns have been made before consisting of a horizontal slatted cylinder revolving iin a box or casing. and we do not wish to claim such construction, broadly; but
Vhat we claim, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combined churn'and washing-machine herein shown and described, composed of the box or easing A, having ways GG at opposite The butter,
ends, and provided with an arched cover, N, Inl testimony that We claim the foregoing as 1o removablebridge-pieoe B, bearingsH H, drivour own We have hereunto affixed our signa ing-gear composed of the crank D, shaft C, tures in presence of tWo Witnesses.
