DEVICE FOR FORVIING. STOVE- LUG IVIOLDS.
SYESIFICATION forming part'of Letters `:Patent No, 289,685, dated December 4, 1883. Application filed September 1883. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM N. MOORE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Joliet, in the county of Vill and State of Illinois, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in a Device and-Process for Forming Stove-Lug Molds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a perspective view of a pattern and molding-flask,showing the apparatus ap plied and in use; Fig. 2, a side elevation of this invention; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the case and side view of its interior mechanism 5 Fig. 4, a plan view on the top of a portion of a pattern. showing the slot d and guide-lugs a2, it being the place at which the apparatus is applied as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of a finished stove-lug cast in the mold formed by the apparatus.
This invention consists in a device for. forming the mold in the molding-sand or an ordinary` flask, in which mold the lugs or ears which catch and support the doors of a stove are cast. l
Heretofore, in casting stove-plates, it has been usual to cast the lug A (shown in Fig. 5) solid, and then cut out the notch z afterward, during which operation a large percentage of these lugs are injured Or broken oit, thus rendering the stove-plate worthless.
The apparatus herein described is for the purpose of forming the impress or mold in the sand in such manner that the lug is cast with the notch z in it, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the notch is perfect and ready for use, and the danger of afterward cutting or iiling it out obviated.
Referring to the drawings, B represents a case containing the pattern c of a lug pivoted at x as its center of motion, and upon which pivot it swings or partially rotates, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. To the upper side of the pattern ais pivoted or hinged a rod, d, eX-
tending upward and out through a vertical slot in the side of the case, and terminates in the thumb-plate d, by means of which the pattern a. is operated. The lug P on the side of the pattern a, in conjunction with the spring P', causes the pattern a to return from the sand after pressure on therod d is released, so that itwill stand in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The mode of operation is substantially as` follows: The stove-plate pattern c has a slot, a', at the place where it is designed to form a lug, A, on the casting, as shown in Fig. 4, and is also provided with little projections 'or guide-lugs a2 a2, for the purpose ofguiding the case B so that it will stand directly over slot c', so that the pattern c can pass down through said slot. The case Bis placedin the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, so as to stand directly over the slot c of the stove-plate pattern. The rod d is then forced downwardby pressure on the thumb-plate d until the lug-pattern c, is forced down into the sand S through the slot a of the plate c until said lug-pattern st vjds in the sand in the position shown in Fi A release of the pressure on rod d permit he lug-pattern c to return by means of the spring P', as shown in Fig. 3, thus leaving its form molded in the sand, as shown .at m in said Fig. 3, to form the mold for the lug A, (shown in Fig. 5,) which, when the plate c is cast, is i11- tegral with said plate, and has the notch z left or cast in it, as shown in said gure. The lug-pattern a is so hinged or pivoted to the case'B that after it has been forced into the sand, as'stated, and commences to return, it will not drag against the walls of the mold m, and especially that part forming ,the notch z, but will swing awayl from it, as shown by the dotted lines inFig. 3, and thus'leave its corners sharp and intact. The back of the pattern is cut to be eccentric with the pivot x, so that when it draws from the sand it will not drag on the sand to disturb it. mold m has thus been formed, the case B is lifted off and the pattern c' removed, when the mold is complete to receive the metalto form the lug A. By this device the mold for the lug A is formed by pressing the pattern for it in the sand in such manneras to leave it complete for the metal, without any further manipulation or patching up by hand, as in ordinary cases.
I am aware stove-door lugs or catches have heretofore been cast with the notch in them, but not byl having the mold formed by such a mechanism as I have described.
After the l IOO The swinging pattern a may be varied in 2. In the device described for forming lugform to make a pattern for lugs or pr'ojeetions molds, a swinging pattern a, adapted to form 15 .on the side of a plate;l Where it is difficult to the mold m, corresponding with it in forni, as vvthdrawapattern otherwise constructed from and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
5 the sand. 3. `In the device described for forming lug- Having thus described my invention, what niolds, the swinging or pivoted pattern a, adapt- I claim as new7 and desire to secure by Letters ed to fornithe mold m, substantially as and 2o Patent, is as follows, to Wit: for the purpose set forth.
