W'. J.. P. KINGSLEY.
' STEAM BOILER.
No. 289,6.61. Z Patented Deo. 4, 1883.

V I INVENTOR:
N. PETERs. PholoLiibagriphen WlihingiumD-C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLEY J. P. KINGSLEY, OF ROME, NEIV YORK.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,661, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed OctoberlS, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLEY JUP. KINGs- LEY, of Rome, Oneida county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to improve steam-boilers, as hereinafter described, and. pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a top view, with part of the cover for conducting the heat removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bottom of the boiler, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the covers inverted.
The inner tubes, a, entering the fire-box I) through the crown-sheet c, conduct the heat products to the top of the boiler, as usual; but instead of allowing said heat products to escape directly to the smoke-pipe. d, I make return-tubes 6 between said inner tubes, a, and the boiler-shell f, and extending down through the water-leg g, and apply covers h,to--receive the heat from said tubes a and return it through tubes e, through theboiler, to the lower end, from which it ascends between shell f and the inclosing wall or jacket i to the smoke pipe d, thus doubling the length of the run of the heat along the boiler, and much more than doubling the heating-surface, and thus correspondingly increasing the steaming-power of the boiler. Together with this return-tube arrangement I attach the circulatingpipes j to the sides of the fire-box, by which considerable advantage is gained by means of rapid circulation of water through the interior of 0 escape of heat by radiation from the top of the cover I make said top double, providing a dead-air space, Z,- or said space may be filled with non-conducting material, if preferred.
A coal-chute, m, extends through the surrounding jacket 5 to the fire-box, entering the upper part of the fire-box to facilitate the supplying of fuel to the furnace, and the door a is attached at the outer end of this chute.
The boiler is mounted on the top of a suitable ash-boX, 0, having an inlet-passage, p, for the supply of air, and an opening at q for raking out the ashes through the door 8 of the inclosing-jacket.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a steam-boiler, the combination, with the tubes a and return-tubes e, of the superposed chamber in cover h, divided into compartments, each compartment communicating with a separate set of tubes, a, and return-tubes e, as shown and described.
V WILLEY J. I. KINGSLEY.
