- CHIMNEY GAP. No. 289,636. Patented Dec. 4, 1883.
UNITED STATES BAT NT Orrrcn.
BENJAMIN P. FIELD, OF BABYLON, NEW YORK.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,636, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed J une 11, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. FIELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Babylon, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Gaps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,'clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chimney-caps, its object being to provide a means whereby a downward draft is prevented in the chimney, and which will afford protection, so that rain cannot beat into the same; and to this end my invention consists in a chimney cowl or cap, which is adapted to be secured to the chimney, and is provided with a box having open ends, the top of said box being longer than the lower side, so as to project over the same, and in providing the upper part with two upright openings, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing the same applied to a chimney; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
A represents a chimney, which is provided with the usual opening, over which is secured my improved cap, which is provided with a collar, B, which extends into the chimney and upward through the base of the cap. This cap is preferably rectangular in cross-sections, and is provided with sides 0 G, which taper from the base upwardly, and are connected to each other by a horizontal top, 0, which is of sufficient length to extend over the base. This top 0 is provided with two cylindrical (or other shaped, if preferable) outlets, D D, which extend upwardly from the top 0. It will be seen that by this construction the cap is provided with a straight passage way through the same, and is also provided with a projecting top, which will prevent rain from beating into the smoke -passage in the chimney.
The outlets D D are located near the ends of the top 0, so that they will not be over the collar or inlet B, which collar projects slightly inwardly above the base of the cap. This upwardly-projecting portion of the collar will prevent rain from finding access to the smokepassage in the chimney. By thisarrangement of the cap the rain is not only prevented from finding access to the smoke passage in the chimney, but the draft is increased and the wind is prevented from blowing down the chimney. When the wind blows from a direction on a line from the horizontal opening in this chimney-cap, the draft will be increased by the passage of the wind over the collar B, as indicated by the arrows 1 1 and the arrows 2 2, respectively. When there is a downdraft, it will take a course indicated by the arrows 3 3, and will be prevented from causing a downdraft in the chimney. The updraft from the outside of the cap will also pass through the openings D D. Ordinarily the smoke or products of combustion will pass out of these openings D D. When the wind. is blowing in an opposite direction from the horizontal openings in the cap, it will increase the draft, as the current passing over the top of the openings D D and past the sides of the horizontal openings will carry the smoke with it.
I am aware that prior to my invention chimneys were provided with caps which have been bent so as to extend horizontally over the same, and I do not claim such, broadly, as my invention; but
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chimney-cap having a horizontal opening, as shown, a top of greater length than its base, and openings D D in said top, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A chimney-cap consisting of an inlet-passage, B, which extends above the base, said base being provided with tapering sides 0 O and a top of greater length than the base, and openings D D, located adjacent to the ends of the top, the parts being organized substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
