Description

ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM FULLER BROWN AND CHARLES LENARD HAIGHT, OF POUCH- KEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
CAR-PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,614, dated December 4, 1883. Application filed September 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. BROWN and CHARLES L. HAIGHT, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Catch for Car-Platforms, of which the follow- The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved catch or hook for car-platforms to prevent the cars from telescoping.
The invention consists of a hook secured to the bottom of the car-platform, said hook projecting upward above and from the said platform.
The invention also consists in guards on the platforms, and in other parts and details, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of -reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sidefelevation of two car-platforms provided with our improved platformcatch. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig.3 is a plan view of the under side of one of the platforms.
To the bottom of each car-platform A two hooks, B, are pivoted to swing laterally, the hooks being bent upward at the edges of the platforms, then project horizontally from the platform, the upper surface of the horizontal parts being beveled toward the free ends. Those parts of the hooks on the bottom of the platform pass through staples C, to check the laterally-swinging movement of the hooks. The platforms are provided with guards D,
under which the upper parts of the hooks pass, so that they'cannot injure the feet of the persons on the platform. The hooks are pivoted, so that they will remain in position when the cars run on curves. When cars run against each other in a collision, one car rises above the other and the upper car telescopes into the other. If the above-described hooks are provided, the cars are prevented from ris-' ing one above the other, and telescoping is thus prevented.
If desired, the hooks can be secured to the top of the platform, and can project under the opposite platform.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a car-platform, of the pivoted hooks Band the staple C, secured to the bottom of the platform, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a car-platform, of the hooks B and the guards D, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a car-platform, of the hooks B, secured to the bottom of the platform, projecting upward on the edge of the same, and projecting outward from the plat form, substantially asherein shown and described.
\VILLIAM FULLER BROWN. CHARLES LENARD HAIGHT.
