UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TALMADGE BLASS, or MILLERTON, NEW YORK, Assronon'ro WILLIAM ANGEVINE AND GEORGE s. FRINK, or SAME PLACE.
INJECTION-REGULATOR FOR'STEAM-CONPENSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,609, dated December 4,
Application filed September 13,1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TALMADGEBLAss, of Millerton, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Injection-Regulator for Steam-Condensers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for regulating the supply of water required to condense a cerof water supplied will always be in proportion to the quantity of steam to be condensed.
The invention consists in a pipe connected with the suction-pipe and surrounded by a vessel also connected with the suction-pipe, which saidpipe is provided with ports adapted to be closed by valves connected by a rod connected with an arm of a rocking shaft provided with another arm carrying a balancing-weight which can be adjusted, according to any desired pressure of water, for opening the valves, whereby a high vacuum can be maintained in the main cylinder at all times.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of my improved regulator for suction-pipes. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line 0 r, Fig. 1.
A short pipe, A, closed on top, is provided with a flange, B, for coupling it to a suctionpipe, and is provided a short distance above the flange B with a larger flange, O, on which a large vessel, D, surrounding the-pipe A, is bolted, which vessel D is provided on its top with a neck, E, having a flange, F,-to which the suction or condenser pipe can-be coupled, so that the device will beinterposed in the length of the suction-pipe. The pipe A is provided with two opposite ports, of which one is larger than the other, in which ports corresponding valves, G G, fit, which are connected by a rod, H, provided in its middle with a slot, I, through which an arm, J, passes, which projects upward in the pipe A, and is attached to one end of a shaft, K, journaled transversely in the bottom of the-pipe A, and 50 passes through a tube, L, provided with a stuffing-box, M,through which the shaftpasses, which shaft is provided at its outer end with an arm, N, on which an adjustablebalancingweight, 0, is mounted, the weight of which seats the valves. The position of the weight can be adjusted according to the quantity of water required to condense the steam -that is, it can be adjusted to admit a greater or less I quantity of water into the inj ection-pipe.
The apparatus can be attached to any injection-pipe, and can be placed in any desired position. It can be adjusted to maintain a high vacuum in the'pump at all times, which is a matter of the greatest importance for the perfect operation of the pump or engine.
Guards Sare secured to the pipe A, for fa= cilitating the seating of the valves G G.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An injection-pipe regulator made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a pipe connected with the suction-pipe, and provided with ports, andsurrounded by a vessel also connected with the injection-pipe, which above-mentioned ports M can be closed by valves connected with one arm of a rocking shaft provided at the other end with an arm carrying a balancing-weight,
- as set forth.
2. The combination, with the pipe A, closed at its top, of the vessel D, surrounding it, the valves G G, the rod H, the shaft K, the arms J N, and the balancing-weight O on the arm N, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3'. The combination, with the pipe A, closed at its top, of the vessel D, surrounding it, the valves G G, the rodH, the shaft K, the arms J N, the balancing-weight O on the arm N, and the stuffing-box M, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
TALMADGE BLASS.
