J. P SHAW. EGG TESTER.
Patnted Dec. 1883.
INVENTOR WITNESSES 6 'flttorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN POWERS SHAWV, OF BRIDGETON, NE\V JERSEY.
EGG-TESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,574, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed May 9, 1883.
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN P. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Egg-Tester, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to egg-testers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, the object of which is to produce an article which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency, and which may be readily changed and adjusted for testing eggs of various kinds and sizes.
To this end it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
1n the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shifting tube detached, and Fig. 4 is a' detail view of one of the faces for the same.
. The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
' A in the drawings designates a cylindrical or other suitably-shaped case, containing a lamp, B, and having a door, 0, through which said lamp may be easily inserted or removed. The inside of said door should be brightly polished, so as to form a reflector, D, throwing the light toward the front side of the casing, which is provided with a laterally extending tube, E, in the inner end of which a powerful lens, F, is secured, which serves to concentrate the light. The top of the casing has a ventilating-opening, G, covered by suitable shades, H. The outer end of the tube E has an inturned annular flange, I, and over the outer end of said tube E is fitted a sliding removable tube, J, called the shifting tube, the outer end of which is likewise provided with an inturned flange, K. Between the flanges I and K is placed a diaphragm, L, in which is cut an opening, M,'of suitable size to allow an egg to be rested against it for purposes of inspection. The diaphragm or face L is held in place by the shifting tube, which may be easily removed when another face (No model.)
rious sizes, such as goose-eggs, turkeys, hens,
ducks, and other eggs.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood. By placing the egg to be in spected against the opening in the face or dia: phragm it is subjected to a powerful concentrated light, which enables an experienced person to tell ata glance, not merely whether the egg is good or bad, but also whether or not the egg is absolutely fresh. and suitable for incubation. It also enables the various stages of incubation to be observed, thus enabling the poultry-raiser to remove those eggs in which life has ceased'to exist, thereby saving time, which in early poultry-raising is of the greatest value.
I am aware that magic lanterns have been constructed in which a lamp-case is provided with a laterally-extending tube having a lens, and that a similar principle has been applied to egg-testers. I am also aware that a perforated washer or diaphragm against which to hold the egg is not newin egg-testers. therefore, I do not claim.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in egg-testers, the combination of the lamp-case A, having tube E, provided with the lens F, the removable tube J, having foot N and flange K, and the de tachable and interchangeable diaphragm L,
This,
having opening M and wire binding P, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN POXVERS SHAXV.
