JOHN soHMITTKNEcHT, 'or NEW YORK, N. Y.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,568, dated December 4, 1833.
` Applicninn filed Fibrunry T, 18.3. `(Nomollelt) To all whom it may concern.:
`of the city, county, and State of New York,
`have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe figures.
Figure lis a sectional side elevation of my improvement shown as applied toa house. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, the house being shown insection through the line x x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 'is a sectional plan view taken through the liney y, Fig. 2.
This invention relates to improvements in `fire-escapes, having `for its objectto admit light to the shaft and to prevent clandestine entrance thereto; and it consists in providing.
' the top of the shaft, having the ladder-rounds,
with bars or a grating, and in providing its `extreme upperend with a skylight, substan- `tially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carryingout my invention I will first `de- ;scribe a form of vfire-escape to which it is particularly applicable.
A represents the walls of a building. B are y `the iioors of the various stories, and C is thel roof.
` The fire-escape is made of Wrought-iron, and
in the form of a rectangular shaft, D, of sufi- `cient si'ze to allow persons to pass up and shaft, and placed at such a distance from the farther side of the shaft as will allow persons ascending and descending to place their hands i and feet upon the said rounds readily and securely. The shaft D is provided on its inner side with openings arranged above each floor B and the roof C and in the basement, and
" closed by doors Hf The fastenings I of the Be it known that I, J oHN SCHMITTKNECHT.
Sp1-ings J, applied to the doors H, close the latter, should the fleeing or escaping persons leave the same open. The inmates are enabled to escape from any floor by way of the basement or the roof. The shaft D is extended above the roof C, and its upper end is closed by iron bars or grating F, to prevent burglars from entering the said upper end, and thus obtaining access to the interior of the building. The top ofthe shaft D is provided with a skylight, G,`which is provided with a plate ofi glass, G', set into the top plate thereof, as shown in Figs. l and 2, to give light to those using the said shaft.
In the case of new buildings the shaft D can be built into any convenient part of the wall. In the case of old buildings the shaft D can be placed against the wall,at the side of the chim ney, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-` 1. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the top of the shaft D, ofA an iron grating, F,
substantially as herein shown and described,
whereby entrance through the top of the said shaft is prevented, as set forth.
2. In a nre-escape, the combination, with the top of the shaft D, of a skylight, G,sub stantially as herein shown and described, whereby the interior of the said shaft is lighted, as set forth. d
