Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC JOHN J. DE GARIS AND TRACY L. PAINE, on MILWAUKEE, wIsooNsIN.
BILL-JOURNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 'LettersPatent No. 289,514, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed April 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, JOHN JYDE GARIS and TRACY L. PAINE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wiscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Journals; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to an entirely new style of blanlcbook, which we denominate a bill-journal, and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, all as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a representation of our bill-journal open at that part where there is only one account to. each leaf; and Fig. 2 is alike view of the book open at that part where there are a plurality of removable bill-heads, each designed for a separate ac count, to each leaf. I
In the use of our bill-journal, it is designed to remove the bill-heads, with the accounts upon them, from time to time-say at monthly intervals and as the accounts of some customers of parties using our bill-journals will average much greater than the accounts of other customers, for convenience sake we have divided our book into two parts, the first half being devoted to full-leaf accounts, while the balance of the book is made up of sheets or leaves each having a plurality of bill-heads to the leaf, separated by rows of horizontal perforations, in addition to the vertical row of perforations placed near the inner margin of every leaf to render the same detachable at will, and as the book would become uneven and awkward to write in if any bill-heads were removed from the middle of the book, we have so arranged it that all the full-leaf bill-head sheets are bound into the book with their printed sides on the right-hand side of the open folio, as shown in Fig. 1, while those sheets that have two or more bill-heads printed sheet of the fullleaf accounts will face the front cover of the book, while the first sheet of the smaller accounts will face the rear cover on them are bound into the book with their printed sides on the left-hand side of the open folio, as shown in Fig. 2; and hence the first of the book, and so 011 backward toward the center of the book, where the last sheet of the smaller accounts comes next the last sheet of the full-leaf accounts. In this way, to begin with each full-leaf or small account-sheet, it
is only necessary to open the front or rear cover of the book, respectively, and there will always be a smooth pad of complete sheets under the accounts to be written on, whether said account is at the beginning or end of the bill-j ournal, and so, according to the ascer- 6o tained general average of each customer, his account will be either at the beginning or end of the book, and when the accounts of the month are all torn out, after the last day thereof,
it will be only necessary to open the book from 6 5 one cover or the other, in writing in the first accounts of the new month, instead of having to find the place for the small accounts somewhere in the interior of the book.
For the small accounts, ordinarily, two billheads to the sheet would be enough; but we do notlimit ourselves in this respect, nor in the matter of the ruling, as under some .circumstances (notably in the grocery or retail dry-goods business) double rows of columns on each sheet under the bill-head would be needed; but these details are of minor importance, and do not in any way affect the essence of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is I Abill-journal consisting of a book of bound bill-heads with a vertical row of perforations near the inner edge of each sheet, half of which face to the left, leaving a full sheet for each account, while the other half I of the sheets face to the right and have a plurality of billheads and accounts to each sheet, separated by horizontal rows of perforations, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set ourhands, on this 22d day of March, 1882, in the presence of two witnesses.
JNO. J. DE GARIS. TRACY L. PAINE.
