Description

A'LLEN.
Bevolver. A
Patented July 3, 1860.
N. FETERS. PHOTO-UTHDGRAPHE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
ETHAN ALLEN, OF WORGESTER, MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING FlRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,951, dated July 3. 1860.
To all whom it may eoncm:
Be it known that I, ETHAN ALLEN, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have iuvented a new and Improved Mode of Oonstructing Repeating Fire-Arns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters marked thereou, in whichdrawings Figurelis a side View of the revolvingpistol. Fig. 2 is a section through the center of the barrel and upper portion of the cylinder, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the inside of the frame 'or recoil-plate.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the recoil-plate of a revolving car- .tridge-pistol with a projection in the form of an inclined plane in the rear ofthe cylinder, so as to relieve the pressure from the end of the Cartridge and allow the cylinder to revolve with freedom.
To enable others skilled in the ait to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its Construction and operation.
A is the frame of the pistol.
B is the cylinder.
O is the recoil-plate.
D is a projection on recoil-phte G, in form of an iuclined plane.
E is a metallic Cartridge. The metallic cartridges E are placed in cylinderB,which, when brought into position to be discharg'ed. comes in coran-:t at the rear end with the incline D. The cylinder B revolves from the base ot' the iucliued plane D,which frees the eylinder from the pressure caused by the setting back of the Cartridge in being discharged, and allows it to turn freely, which is not the case when the recoil-plate is of a level or even surface.
Other parts not mentioned being similar to those in common use, and easily understood by the drawings, a more particular description is not deened necessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, I would state that Ido not claim a flat or level surface on arecoiI-plate,as this is notew; but
What I do claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Providing the recoil-plate of revolving firearms with a projeetiou in the form ot' an inclined plane, so that the cylinder will he free to revohfe at the first minute movement of the hammer, substantially in the manner and for the i purpose aboveset forth and described.
