UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.

`SPECIFIt'lA'ZLION forming part.ofjLetters` Patent No. 289,506, datedIDeoember 4, 1883,
i Apptcation'med Apulia-1,1883. model.)
To all whom it `may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JAMES DAVIDSON, of Central City, in the county of Gilpin and State of Colorado, have invented a new and I1nproved Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention consists in a socket-wrench provided with expansion-jaws, and a loose sleeve constructed to contract the jaws upon the nut or article, as hereinafter described and Claimed, the obj ect being to furnish a wrench that can be more readily applied than socketwrenches as heretofore made, and which will not wear the angles of a nut or cock when ap-` plied.
Referencc is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,` in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. j
Figure 1 is aperspective view of my irn-` proved socket-wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of thesame. Fig. 3 is a cross-sec-` tion on line :v x, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 'y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an end view of the wrench as made for use with six-sided nuts, Figs. 3, 4, and 5 being shown in larger size. s
A is thehandle portion, held on a square rod, B, by a nut, a, at the outer end.
C is a tube or sleeve formed with an end portion, b, fitting snugly vO11 the inner end of rod B, which has a fiange or cap, c, to prevent disconnection. The cap c is formed with a square loop or socket, d.
D D are the jaws within the vsleeve C, and engaging the loop d by shoulders at their inner ends, whereby they are held by the sleeve,
and are left free to open and close at their The outer ends of jaws D are made with `V-grooved clamps Z, and the end of;` sleeve O is fltted'with a plate, m, having an oblong aperture,`h,` with semicircular ends, that allows expansion of the jaws by the spring g, that is fitted between the jaws. The sleeve being loose upon the end of rod B, it is free to turn independent of the jaws until by the shifting of the aperture h the clamps Z are closed together. The end b of the sleeve is made with a flange, i, that nia-y be angular for application of a wrench, or it may have a hole, as shown, for receiving a rod, K, to turn j This wrench is especially adapted for turning on and off the stop-cocks of water-pipes laid in the ground, as the square on the stem of the cock can be more readily found than with a solid wrench. The clamps being Inade to grip tightly, the corners of the nut or square will not be worn off.
Having thusdesoribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a wrench, the combination, with jaws D, held apartjby a spring, of a swiveled outer tube, C, havingend plate, m, with oblong aperture h, divided into two-part Circles adapted to operate on the jaws, as described.
2. The combination, with the tube G, of the rod B, having the loop-socket d, and the jaws D, having j shoulders engaging said socket, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a socket-wrench, the combination of handle-rod B, formed with loop d, jaws D, engaging the loop, and the loose sleeve C, formed to close the jaws when turned, substantially as shown and described.
. J AMES DAVIDSON.
