1 Claim. (Cl. 150-12) This invention relates to the art of strap type carrying handles for handbags and more particularly to the mount therefor.

As conducive to an understanding of the invention, it is noted that where a handbag strap which may be made of leather or plastic, has reversely bent ends through each of which the cross piece of a substantially U-shaped connector link extends, and the link has inwardly bent fingers at each of the ends of its legs which are pivotally mounted in an associated support sleeve afiixed to the handbag, the constant movement of the pivoted links in use of the handbag will cause the cross pieces thereof to rub against the reversely bent ends of the strap, with resultant rapid wear and breakdown of the leather, necessitating replacement of such strap.

It is accordingly among the objects of the invention to provide a pivotal mount for a handbag strap, which has but few inexpensive parts that may readily be fabricated at low cost, that is simple to install and will eliminate frictional wear of the reversely bent end of the handbag strap due to pivotal movement of the amount in use of the handbag.

According to the invention, these objects are accomplished by the arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.

Referring now to the drawings, the handbag shown in Fig. 1 may be of any conventional type having amouth 11 with a pair of coacting side panels and having sleeves 12 aflixed near the lateral edges of the mouth 12 and extending at right angles to such mouth.

The sleeves 12 in the illustrative embodiment shown are longitudinally slit as at 13 and each of the edges defined by the slit 13 has a projecting finger 14, the fingers 14 of both sleeves 12 extending through the material of the handbag on the same side of the mouth 11 thereof and being bent outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, securely to retain the sleeves 12 in place.

Associated with each of the sleeves 12 is a substantially U-shaped connector link 15 which desirably has a pair of substantially parallel legs 16 joined at one of their "ice ends by a crosspiece 17 which preferably is formed integral with the legs 16 and has a sleeve 18 rotatably mounted thereon.

The free end of each of the legs 16 of the link has an mwardly bent finger 19 extending at right angles to the associated leg, said fingers being positioned in opposed ends of an associated sleeve 12 pivotally to mount the link with respect to the sleeve 12.

Each of the end portions of the carrying strap 21 of the handbag extends between the legs 16 of an associated link 15 and is reversely bent as at 22 around the associated sleeve 18, the free end 23 of each of the reversely bent portions 22 being secured as by riveting as at 24, in the illustrative embodiment shown, to the strap 21 inwardly of the reversely bent portion 22 thereof.

With the construction above described, it is apparent that the link 15 may readily be applied to the strap 21 and in use of the handbag, as the link 15 pivots with respect to the sleeve 18, the cross piece 17 thereof will rub against such sleeve 18 and not against the reversely bent portion 22 of the strap.

As a result, no friction will be imparted to such reversely bent portion of the strap so that wear and resultant breakdown thereof with resultant need for replacement, is eliminated.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely diiferent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claim, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

As an article of manufacture, a ladys handbag having a mouth with a pair of coacting side panels, a pair of parallel mounting sleeves positioned respectively near the lateral edges of the mouth and secured to the same side panel, said sleeves extending at right angles to said mouth, a carrying strap having reversely bent end portions secured to define loops, a substantially U-shaped link associated with each of said loops, each of said links having a pair of legs with a connecting cross piece joining one of the ends of each of the legs and formed integral therewith, each of said cross pieces extending through an associated loop, a sleeve rotatably mounted on each of said cross pieces, the free ends of the legs of each of said links being inwardly bent at substantially right angles to the legs to define mounting portions, the mounting portions of each of said links extending into the ends of an associated mounting sleeve pivotally to mount the links.
