UNITED STATES nTENT OFFICE..
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,399, dated December 4, 1883. Application filed `September 25, 1883. (No model.)
'o all whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, CHARLES BELL EMER- sON, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway-Car Couplings; and I do hereby declare the same to be described infthe following specification and represented in the accom` panying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top View, Fig. a side eleva-` tion, Fig. 3 a median longitudinal section, and Eig. 4 a transverse section, of a draw-bar and its coupling provided with my invention, the nature of which is defined inthe claims hereinafter presented.
The said invention relates, particularly, to the car-coupling described and illustrated in the United States Patent No. 263,836, dated September 5, 1882, and granted to Andrew J Avery, myimprovement being to prevent the pivoted gravitating sectoral latch or weight of such coupling from falling within-its chamber ofthe draw-bar sufficiently to so bind the coupling-pin, when the latter is down, as to render it difficult to raise the said pin, either for shackling or unshackling77 the cars.
To this end-I provide the said sectoral latch with ears to project laterally from it or an upward extension of it, and rest upon the contiguous parts of the draw-bar when the latch is down.
In the drawings, A denotes the draw-bar; B, the sectoral gravitating latch, and C the coupling-link pin, the said latch being pivoted at its rear part within a chamber, a, in the drawbar, and such chamber being open at top for the latch to play through. The passage b, for the link-pin to go down through the draw-bar,
opens laterally into the chamber, in order for the gravitating latch to bear on the pin when the latter is in its raised position, as represented in the drawings. The gravitating lai ch B,whose pivotal pin is shown at c, has an eX- tension, d, arranged to project upward from it out of the chamber a, such extension being furnished with two ears, e e, that project from its opposite sides in manner as represented. These ears, by resting on contiguous parts of the top of the draw-bar, sustain thelatch when it is in its lowest position, and keep it from falling farther, so as to improperly jam the pin.
To allow the pin to fall to couple a link to the draw-bar, thelatch is to be forced upward by the coupling-link on its passage into the chamber a.
I claim as an improvement in the car-coup ling of the aforesaid patent'to Averyl. The sectoral gravitating latch provided with ears to extend from it in opposite directions, and rest on the top or contiguous parts of the draw-bar, such being for the purpose set forth.
2. The sectoral gravitating latch lB, provided with the projection d and the ears e e, extending therefrom, all being substantially as shownWN and described, and for the purpose as explained.
