LAMINATED PADLOCK Original Filed Oct. 27, 1955.
I y v T0 5 mmzw BY mm rmm United States Patent Company, Milwaukee, Wis.,'a corporation of Wisconsin Original application October 21, 1955, Serial No. 543,182. gDivided and this application July 16, 1957, Serial No.
"1 Claini.- (CI. 70-38) This invention relates to improvements in laminated padlocks, and more particularly to an improved shackle plate incorporated in the laminated body of a padlock, and isa division of application Serial No. 543,182, filed October'27, 1955, now abandoned.
A primary object of the present'invention is to provide, in a padlock of the character described, a shackle plate provided with simpleand effective means for movably anchoring the extended end of a shackle. Heretofore', in the manufacture of padlocks it has been the-practice to anchor the extended'leg of the shackle in the padlock body by' means ofa pin within the padlock body but 'this has presented problems in the assembly of the padlock. When a pin is utilized for engaging the extended end of the shackle, the pin which is loosely held within'the padlock body, offers only a relative slight amount of engagement with'the shackle'and will therefore be susceptible .of wear during constant use of the padlock when pressure is exerted on the shackle. The pin utilized is relatively small audit is furthermore a slow and cumbersome task to accurately mount the same within the padlock body, and the pin method of anchoring the extended leg of the padlock shackle does not readily-lend itself for use in connection with a laminated padlock wherein the body iszcomposed of a series of superimposed plates. I
The present invention-obviates the objections noted 'in connection with a shackle engaging pin by the utilization within the padlock body of an apertured plate having a depending annular collar which is bumped to prevent withdrawal of the shouldered end of the extended leg of the padlock shackle after the assembly operations have been completed. In the present invention, instead of the utilization of a member affording only limited engagement as between the shackle leg and the anchoring member within the padlock body, a specially constructed shackle plate is provided which forms one of the laminations of the padlock body and which is provided with a flanged opening to form a substantial wall of metal entirely around the shackle leg and which is finally bumped to alter its shape and reduce its size to prevent withdrawal of the shouldered end of the shackle leg but retaining firm and substantial engagement with the shackle leg throughout its circumference, the connection being one which cannot become impaired through wear and usage.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a laminated padlock, a heavy shackle leg encircling ring which easily receives the shackle leg during assembly and which is thereafter distorted to movably retain the extended leg of the shackle within the lock body.
A further, more specific object of the invention is to provide, in a laminated padlock, a shackle plate having a shackle leg receiving opening therein surrounded by a relatively deep collar which forms an extended guide for the shackle leg as it moves inwardly and outwardly relative to the padlock body during operation of the padlock.
A further, more specific. object of the invention is to provide, in a padlock of the class described, a shackle plate having a shouldered opening therein through which the shackle leg extends and which provides a smooth bearing.
for movement of the shackle leg which will improve-with wear and which will withstand deformation and strar during repeated operations of the padlock.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved laminated padlock, and its parts andcombinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof. a
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: 1
Fig. l is a side view of alaminated padlock with a portion thereof broken away and in section to show the manner in which the extendedleg of the shackle is movably anchored;
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view ofthe shackle plate before deformation of the collar surrounding itsvshackle leg opening;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the plate shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional view taken on line. 4-4 of Fig. ll 1 In the type of padlock construction to which the present inventionv pertains, a strong body .or casing is provided "by superimposing a plurality of sheet metal plates 8 which are formed with alined openings serving to provide the required recesses and chambers in the bodyor casing and which are permanently assembled in laminated relation by means of connecting pins 9. In addition to the intermediate plates 8 there will be in the assembly a top plate 10, a bottom plate 11, and a shackle plate 12, the shackle plate 12 being specially formed and being substantially midway between the top and bottom plates opening 16 is originally of circular contour and is surrounded by a relatively deep collar or flange 17 which projects substantially below the undersurface of the plate 12.
The long leg 15 of the shackle 13 has its inner end reduced as at 15' with the inner extremity thereof being formed with an enlarging collar or shoulder 18. The opening 16 in the plate 12 is originally of sufi'icient diameter to just permit the passage therethrough of the shouldered extremity 18 of the shackle leg 15, and the shouldered opening 16-17 of the shackle plate 12 is of somewhat less diameter than the openings in the superimposed plates 8, except that the plate 8' immediately inwardly of the plate 12 may have a slightly enlarged opening so as to receive therewithin the flange or collar 17 of the plate 12 in its original form. It will be observed from Fig. 2 that the end of the shackle plate 12 adjacent its shouldered opening has a slight outward off-set 12' which in the initially assembled relation of the various plates projects outwardly slightly beyond the adjacent plates 8 and 8'. Also, said end portion of the plate 12 has eccentrically shaped openings 20 therein extending to peripheral portions of the opening collar 17 and which leave a web of metal 21 which extends from the collar 17 to the end off-set 12' of the plate 12.
After the various plates 8, 8', 10, 11 and 12 have been assembled in superimposed body forming relationship and the long leg 15 of the shackle is passed into the cavity formed by the alined plate openings, the projecting end portion 12' of the plate 12 is subjected to a bumping operation by a kick press which is effective to drive ,f at ented July 7, 1.959

of .the shackle thenurgestheshackle outwardly relative to"the"casing cavity to"an*extent' to remove the notched end of the short leg 14, completely. out of the casing to'permit turning movements'of the padlock shackle. The movement of the long leg'of the'shackle'relative to the casing is limited by theengagement'of"theenlarged end" 18 of-theshackle'leg 15"withth e 'de'formed'collar 17 of the shackle'plate'12 so that" complete withdrawal of'the' long leg'of theshackle fromthecasing is'preventedbut" the deformed collar l7 completely surrounds thereduced" portion 15 of theshackle'leg and'providesa cylindrical bearing surface ofsubstantial depth whichcannot work: looseorbecomeimpairedbvwear: In fact, continued longitudinal movement of theshackle portion 15 within the collar 17 will smooth and-polish-the engaging bear ing surfaces -and' improve-the ''operationof the padlock. From'theforegoingdescription it"Wlll be seen that the reduced portion 15' of the long shackle'leg 'is actually at all times-encircled by a heavy band'of metal which forms astop'upon-outward movement of'said shackleleg.
