FRUIT-JAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,276, dated November 27, 1883.

Be it known that I, ALBERT S. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridge ton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to fruit-jars; and it has for its object to produce a jar to which the cover may be easily and conveniently applied and secured, and from which it may be readily removechwhen desired, the construction being such that the cover, when applied, shall seal the jar in an air-tight manner.

To this end my invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved fruitjar with the cover in position. Fig. 2 is a top view of the jar with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover detached. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View of the jar and cover; and Fig. 5 is a side view of the jar and cover, illustrating the method of applying the latter.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

A in the drawings designates the jar, the neck of which is provided, below the top rim, with an annular flange, B, supporting a rubher band or gasket, 0, which serves as packing. The flange B is provided on diainetrieally opposite sides with vertical notches D,

which are gradually beveled or sloping, so as I to form lugs E l projecting radially from and integral with the body of the jar.

F is the cover, which has an annular rim or flange G, adapt-ed to rest upon the gasket or packing O. The upper side of the cover is provided, near its edge, with an annular groove or recess, H, in which is seated a ring, I, provided on diametrically-opposite sides with up ward-projecting lugs or cars J, in which a bail or handle, K, is hinged, as shown. Theupper side of the ring I is beveled or sloping from each of the lugs J down to the opposite one, so as to form a double cam or wedge. F is also provided with a central upwardlyprojecting stud, L, having atransverse perforation, M, in which is seated a wire bail, N,

The lower ends of the legs 0 are bent so as to form hooks P, facing in the opposite direction. The bail N serves to hold the ring I in position in the groove H, and also serves for attaching the cover to the jar, as will be presently described.

By giving the cover a slight turn the hooks P may then be thrown into engagement with the lugs E, thus connecting the cover with the jar. By means ofthe handle or bail K the ring I may then be turned, thus causing its beveled or wedge-shaped sides to force the ends of the bail N in an upward direction and tighten the cover upon the jar. The fastening is now absolutely secure, and the jar may be conveniently carried by the handle K. To remove the cover, the operation is simply reversed.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesneck of which is provided on diametricallyopposite sides with radially-proj eoting lugs, of a cover having a central upwardly-projecting transversely-perforated stud, and a springwire bail seated in the same, and having downturned ends, the ends of which are bent so as to form hooks, substantially as herein set forth.

2. A cover for fruitjars, having an annular and provided on diametrically-0pp0sile sides with ears or lugs having a bail or handle, the upper side of said ring being beveled or wedgesha-ped from each lug down to the other one, and a transverse springbail having downturned ends bent so as to form hooks, all as set forth, in combination with a jar the neck of which is provided on diametrically-opposite sides with radiallyprojecting lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
