To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JARVIS B. EnsoN, of the town of Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pat- 1 ent-Leather and 2. ,Substitute Therefor, of

"This invention has for its object the production ;of an article which resenrbles patentleather and possesses properties superior to term; aud t-heinvcntion consists, first, in takingsheets of leather-such as are technically called T, splits, q'r those which are formed from the sides of leather which have been sub-- jeetcd to the spliting proeess-and applying upon the surface of thesame thin sheets of Lz'ylouite or a similar substance of apropcr color, and which is applied by partially dissolving the surface of the zylonite, or its equi valent, by any of the well-known solvents "of such'substances, and then subjecting the same to pressure, as by a pair of rolls or any gradual] y progressing .eompressingsurface,

I do not broadly claim the method of coat- 40 ting leather with a. soluble, material, for this has been done before; but
that I do claim is-- 1. The method of makinga substitute for patent-leather, consisting in partially dissolving the surface of a sheet of zylonite or simi' Ian substance by a suitable sol-vent; secondly, applying the said sheet to the material forming the ,base, with the partially dissolved side of the'shcet'next thereto, and, thirdly, applying pressure to expel the surplus solvent and air, and cause an iutimateunion of the base and sheet of zylonit-e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The method of making a substitute for patent-leather, consisting in partially dissolving the surface of a sheet of Zylonite or similar substance andtsubsequently uniting said partially -dissolved surface to the material forming the-base, and partially dissolving the exterior surface ofthc sheet of zylonitc and ,scribed my name and aflixcd my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
