SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,070, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed September 13, 1882.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. COLE, of Columbus Junction, in the county of Louisa and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breech-Loading Fire- Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in breech-loading firear1ns; and it consists in the combination of a breech-block having a safety-groove in its front side, an operating lever provided with a projection on one side, and a cartridge-extractor which is pivoted at its lower end, the breech block being so formed that its ends form a finish both above and below the receiver, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

This receiver, instead of being cut or sloped away from the rear end of the cartridge or the rear end of the breechblock is here made to extend horizontally backward to the point D, so as to form a solid bearing for the breech-block from its top to its bottom.
The breech-block G has four straight sides, and is made just long enough to extend from the top to the bottom of the receiver and form a finish above and below. In the front side of the block are formed a suitable number of teeth or cogs, with which the teeth or cogs of the segment H, formed upon the front end of the operating-lever l, engage. \V hen the rear end of this lever is moved downward and forward the block is depressed, as shown in dotted lines, and when the lever is returned to place the block is forced back into position again, so as to form a resistance for the forward end of the cartridge when the explosion takes place. this block is made the safety-groove J, which is just suiiiciently wide and deep to allow the block, when being raised in position, to pass over the rear end of the cartridge without striking against it in such a manner as to cause a premature explosion.
here no provision is made to prevent the cartridge being struck by the block when it is raised in position, when the block is raised suddenly it is apt to strike against the rear end of the cartridge containing the fulminate, and thus cause the cartridge to explode. By means of the groove here shown the cartridge will never be touched by the upper end of the block as it moves into position; but the block will form just as solid a resistance to the shell as though the groove were not made, from the fact that the groove does not extend rear of the cartridge.
As the receiver is made to extend horizontally backward, so as to form a support for the breech-block from its top to bottom, and as the breech-block extends above the cartridge, it will be seen thata perfectly-solid breech is formed to receive the force of the explosion, and hence there will be no springing of the receiver, so as to cause the kick of the breech upon the shoulder, which always takes place where the receiver is cut away, so as to form no support for the block above the top of the cartridge.
Pivoted inside of the receiver, at the bottom of the opening which is made through it, is the extractor O. This extractor consists of a single piece, which is pivoted upon the stud or projection P, formed upon the inside of the receiver, and which has a positive movement in striking the shell. For the purpose of operating this extractor there is formed upon one sideof the segment a projection, 1?,which, as the lever is moved downward and forward to its full extent, strikes against this extractor. and forces it backward in such a manner as to throw the shell of the cartridge entirely clear from the gun.
