No. 289,001. Patented Nov. 27, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT V OFFICE.
JOSEPH WILLIAM HIGGS, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA.
R OLL FOR ROLLING CAR-COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,001, dated November 2'7, 1883.
Application filed May 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn WV. HIGGS, of
' Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improved Rolls for Rolling Railroad-Gar Coupling-Pins; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rolls with the dies registering. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with rolls given a quarter-turn from the position shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 illus trate the coupling-pin blanks before cutting, also sections on lines a: a: and y 3 The object of my invention is to roll blanks to be subsequently cut into railroad-car coupling-pins; and my invention consists in the particular construction of rolls I employ to roll these blanks.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which Ihave carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents the upper roll, and A the lower roll, provided with grooves a a, b b, c c. The groove a a is pro vided, if desired, merely to bring the bars to a uniform diameter before'passin g them through either grooves b b or c c. In the edges of grooves b b are inserted pins d d, with their ends slightly projecting from the surface of the grooves. Alongside of each projecting end of the pins cl cl is a semi-conical depression, 6 c, with its greatest depth next to the pin, so that when the depressions in the upper and lower rolls register, the space within the depressions represents a short cone. When the hot bar is passed through the rolls in groove 11 b, the pins d d at each revolution displace a portion of the hot metal and squeeze it into the depressions c 6, thereby forming two studs or projections, f f, on the blank B at regular intervals of a proper length to cut the pins. The blank is then cut at aboiit the points i v forming a cheap but perfectlyoperating coupling-pin.
When it is desired to have fourprojections on the pinto form a head, I use the grooves c c, where the pins 9' g are located slightly within the edges of the grooves and project to a somewhat greater extent than pins (Z d, and behind each pin within the groove is a conicalshaped depression, I Z, and each pin 9 9 displaces enough metal to fill each depression 11, and thus form projections or studs 8 s on the blank E. (See Fig. 4.)
I am aware it is not new to roll railroad coupling-pin blanks with heads at intervals, and then divide the blanksinto proper lengths; and I am also aware that rolls have been cast with inequalities to produce such result; and hence I make no broad claim to such devices; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rolls A A, provided with grooves, having pins inserted in the faces of said grooves, and depressions cut in the rolls adjacent to the inserted pins, as set forth.
