Description

(HoMocieL) H. O. SZINK.
Die for Making Draw Heads for Cars.
No. 232,215 Patented Sept.14,1880.
NAPETERS. PHOYOAJYRDCRAPNER. W lBHFNGVON a O UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. SZINK, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO LEWIS R. POFFENBERGER, OF SAME PLACE.
DIE FOR MAKING DRAW-HEADS FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,215, dated September 14, 1880.
Application filed May 1, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. Scour, of Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Making Draw- Heads for Railroad-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the some, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the die. Fig. 2 is a. perspective view of the cutter. Fig. 3 is a view of the die with the cutter in position ready for operation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the blank to be operated upon. Fig. 5 shows the same in its finished state.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to dies for making draw-heads for railroadcars; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Heretofore draw-heads have been welded into the required shape-a laborious and coinparatively expensive operation.
By my improvement the draw-head is made in two sections of equal size and shape, which, by being welded together, constitute the complete draw-head.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the body of my improved die, which is arrn nged under a drophammer of ordinary construction. The said bodyis provided with a vertical recess, B, having beveled or sloping sides, said recess being adapted to contain the shank of the draw-head which is to be formed.
In operation, a rough hlank'is prepared, oi substantially the shape shown in Fig. 4. of the drawings. The small end of said blank is insorted into recess B, and it is then exposed to the action of the drop-hammer. By this a portion of the metal is forced into recess B, which thus properly shapes the drawhead shank. The balance is flattened upon the top of the die, the hammering being continued until the metal is reduced to the proper thickness. The blank is then removed from the (lie, which may be done by driving a wedge into a slot or recess, 0, intersecting the recess B, thus loosening and releasing the blank, which may then be easily removed.
The next step in the operation is to adjust; the cutter I), which is a steel die having vertioal inner and beveled or sloping outer edges, converging at the top in a sharp edge. From the shape of the die, which is clearly shown in the drawings, Fig. 2, it will be seen that it is adapted to cut the flattened portion of the blank to a shape approximating that of one-half of the mouth or front rim of a. drawheall. After adj noting the die or cutter, which 6 may he provided with pins or studs to enter recesses or depressions in the face of the die A, the blank is replaced, as shown in Fig. 3, and again subjected to the action of the-dropliaminer, by which it is forced downagainst the cutter, which removes the superfluous metal and trims the blank to its proper shape, as shown in Fig. 5. It is then ready to be finally removed from the die and welded to another similar blank to form the complete drew-head. Q
This invention is exceedingly simple, easily operated without skilled labor, and greatly reduces the cost of draw-heads.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaiin and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- As an improvement in apparatus for manufacturing draw-heads, the die A, having rccess B, with beveled or slopin sides, in comhination with the sharp-edge cutter D, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I. claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in go presence of two witnesses.
HENRY o. szmrc.
