Description

C. H. WILLIAMS.
Dies for Making Bar-Coupling Pins. No, 155,910. Patente d0ct113,1874.
WITNESSES. INVENTUR.
$00M m. 0mm mmzzms Q). m, P {WWW UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR MAKING CAR-COUPLING PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,910, dated October 13, 1874; application filed December 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Dies for Making Oar-Ooupling Pins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of my dies. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single die, showing the form of the concavity. Fig. 3 is an end view of my dies when closed. Fig. 4 is a view of a car-coupling pin such as I propose to produce by my improved dies.
The object of my invention is to produce in one operation a car-coupling pin which shall be perfectly developed in all of its points and finished without a tin.
My invention consists of a pair of dies, substantially such as hereinafter described, and and upsetting plunger which operate together in producinga perfect coupling-pin, which shall require no further treatment.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows:
A B are the dies, in each of which is a concavity of precisely the same contour. The cylindrical opening of these dies, at a, should be of somewhat larger diameter than the neckcavity, at b. I propose in operating my dies to situate them upon a base, D, and attach the die A securely thereto, while the die B might be made movable and operated by toggle-levers E, as shown, or any other suitable means.
It will be evident that both of the dies might be made movable, if desired, without changing the character of my invention.
0 is the plunger, having, in this instance, a concavity, c, in its forward end, which points the pin. The end of the plunger may be left with a flat surface or otherwise.
The bar which is to be formed into the pin is heated and laid between the concavities of the dies as they are approaching each other, the forward end thereof resting at about the point Z) or at the necking portion of the dies, so that when the dies are closed upon each other the plunger, in advancing, strikes the end of the bar at 1, and forces the bar forward until its end strikes or abuts against the dies at 61. Thus it will be seen that a portion of the end of the bar, in passing the contracted neckcavity at b, is drawn or scraped backward and laterally to assist in filling the collar-cavity.
By this means a beautiful symmetrical head and neck will be made, an even and unbroken collar be produced, and the pin furnished with the necessary point.
I am aware that inclosed pressure-dies have been used for making square and hexagonal, and perhaps other bolts, and I do not wish to claim any dies of such form; but I am not aware that pressure dies such as shown in the accompanying drawing, and operating as described, have ever been used for making a carcoupling pin in which not only a collar is formed, but a symmetrical neck produced and an even spherical head developed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The dies A B, constructed substantially as described, in combination with a plunger, 0, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. H. WILLIAMS.
