Description

(No Model.)
H. H. EATHEBTON. V CUTTER CHAIN FOR DITG HING MACHINES, &c.
Patented Nov. 20, 1883.
UNITED STATES ATENT Prion,
HENRY H. EATHERTON, OF MONTIOELLO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO A. C. THOMPSON, OF SAME PLACE.
CUTTER-CHAIN FOR DlTCHlNG-MACHINES, 80.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,930, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed April 3, 1883,
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. EATHERTON, of Monticello, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Cutter-Chains for Ditching-Machines and Excavators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cutter-chain. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to cutter-chains for ditching-machines, excavators, and similar machines; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the aceompanyin g drawings, the letter A indicates a frame, the upper and lower surfaces of which are tangential to the drivewheel B and the guide-wheel 0, both of which are journaled between plates D, extending over the ends of the frame or bar from the sides of the same, said ends being recessed at E, to al-' low a portion of the wheels to project into the said recesses.
F is the endless cutter-chain, which consists of a series of rectangular sprocket-links, G, and the cutter-blades H, which are in the form of sections of cylinders, are fastened at intervals to the links, their inner edges being fastenedto the transverse portion of the link, while their sides are fastened to the sides of the links.
The rim of the guide-wheel is out to form sprockets I, fitting into the rectangular openings of the links, and forming bottoms for the cutting-links when they pass over the wheel, cutting into the ground, and traveling upward filled with dirt. v
To prevent the dirt from falling through the links when the latter pass from the guide-wheel (No model.)
over upon the upper surface of the frame or bar A, which then serves as a bottom for the links, the edge J, formed by said surface and recess E, projects so far over the wheel as to nearly touch the top of the sprockets, causing the dirt to slide over upon the upper surface of the bar or frame, as if the links had a solid bottom.
The rim of the drive-wheel forms a series of sprockets, K, the one side, L, of which is radial, while the upper surfaces, M, are inclined, as shown in the drawings, and as the links pass from the surface of the frame or bar the sprockets will enter the spaces in the link and the upper edge of the radial sides will scrape the inner face of the cutter-blades, throwing the dirt out, which rolls down the inclined top of the sprocket at the upper end of the elevator.
In this manner it will be seen that the chain may be used in clay or similar sticky ground, and that the links are cleaned and emptied after every filling in such a manner that no unnecessary weight or drag will be upon the chain.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the cutter-chain F, having rectangular open links G, and provided at intervals with cutter-blades H, of the form of a section of a cylinder, secured to the links, as set forth, with the guide-wheel 0, having sprockets I, corresponding in shape and size to the apertures of the links, the drive wheel B, and bar A, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the endless cutterchain F, having rectangular open links G, and provided at intervals with cutter-blades H, of the form of a section of a cylinder, secured to said links in the manner described, and carried over guide-pulley G and over the upper and lower surface of frame or bar A, with the drive-wheel B, having sprockets K, having radial sides L and inclined upper surfaces, M, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
The herein-described cutter-chain and elevator for ditching-machines, &c., oonsist- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ing of bar or frame A, having recesses E at my own I have hereunto affixecl my signature each end, and projecting plates D, chain F, in presence of two witnesses.
having cutter-blades H, drive-wheel B, and HENRY H. EATHERTON. guide-wheel 0, all constructed, combined, and \Vitnesses: arranged as and for the purpose shown and JOHN M. DASHIELL, v
set forth. l RUFUS KIRTLER.
