IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification founing part of Letters Patent No. 25,5486, dated J unc 26, 1860.
RhaVe. invented a new and Improved Corn- Planter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specication, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view of my inven tion. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken in the line a? x, Fig. l. Fig. 8 is a detached view of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. .y
The object of this invention is to obtain a corn-planting machine of simple construction, by which corn may be planted in check-rows without previously furrowing the ground.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A A represent a pair of thills, which are mounted on wheels B B', and are connected at their back parts by traverse-bars c b c, forming a frame to sustain the working parts of the machine. The wheel B has its periphery provided with teeth or projections a to prevent slipping, and to the axle C 0I' the wheels and adjoining wheel B a toothed wheel, (l, is placed.
To the front traverse-bar, a, a frame, D, is attached by joints or hinges e, and in this frame D a shait, f, is tted longitudinally, one end of the shaft projecting beyond the thills, and 'having a wheel, g, on it, which wheel, when the seed-distributing device is in operation, gears into the wheel d on axle C. On the shaft j', and within the frame D, there is placed a cam, E. This is a double cam, or it is formed4 of two parts, h fi, which actuate different devices, the part h actuating a seedslide, F, through the medium of a lever, G, and .the other part, fz', actuating markers H through the medium of levers I and vertical sliding bars J.
l The part i of the cam E may be described as being formed of a cylinder with longitudinal sections removed to form two prominent parts, jj, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and the part 71.
' may be described as being a zigzag flange having a circumferential position on the part fi. The front end of the lever Gis forked, and the part z' of the cam is tted and works within the fork, as shown in Fig. l.`
K K are seed-boxes on the back traversebar, c, of the thills, and over the bottom of which boxes the seed-slide F works, the back part of lever G being attached to the slide F by means of a pin, lf, which is attached to the slide F, and is fitted in a slot, Z, in the back end of the lever, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The seed-slide F is perforated, or is provided with seed-cells m, and works in the usual way, distributing the seed into hollowteeth or shares G G, the upper ends of 'which are attached to the under side ofthe bar c by joints c', as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The teeth or shares G are connected to the frame D by rods a.
To the back ends of the thills A A a crossbar, L, is attached. rIhis bar projects at both ends beyond the sides of the thills A A, and each end ofthe bar L is forked or divari cated to form bearings or guides for vertical rods M M, which may be made of spade form at their lower ends to form the markers H, as shown in Fig. 3.
To the upper end of each rod M the levers I are attached. These levers have their fulcra o in uprights O on the frame of the machine, and the front ends of the levers I are connected to the bars J, which are slotted vertically, or may be described as being formed of two vertical parts, p p, between which the shaft f of the frame D passes. (See Fig. 2.) The lower end of each bar J has a pin, q, attached, said pins bearing against th e under. si dc of thepart of cam E.
To the front part of the frame D a chain, N, is attached, said chain passing within reach of the drivers seat, which may be placed on the frame at any convenient point-on the center traverse-bar, b, for instance.
. The operation is as follows: As the machine is drawn along, the frame D being -in a horizontal position, the shaft f will be rotated by the gearing d g, and the cam E will actuate the seed-slide F and one marker H, the latter dropping simultaneously with the corn and marking, as one row of corn is planted, the spots for the hills in the succeeding row. As the machine passes along to plant the succeeding row of corn the driver watches the spots made by the markers II during the planting of the previous row, and so manages the seed-distrib uting device that the seed will be dropped at said spots. This result is effected by raising the frame D, and thereby throwing the wheel g out of gear with the wheel el, so that the cam E may be turned backward or forward until it is brought in right position to actuate the slide F at the proper time to drop the seed in the desired place, the machine remaining stationary, or the machine may be kept moving and the frame D allowed to drop at the proper time to produce the desired result. W'hen the frame D is raised, the shares G are elevated above the ground. The machine, therefore,
may be readily moved from place to place.
I do not claim the markers H, when separately considered, for they have been previously used; nor do I claim. a zigzag cam for operating, through the medium of a lever, a reciprocating seed-slide; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by T. S. MILLS.
