SPECIFICTION forming part of`Letters Patent No. 288,851, dated November 20, 18.83.
Application filed July To zZ/l whom, t may coacernf Be it known that I, ROBERT C. PARVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Holly, in the countyvof Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axles and Axle-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying My invent-ion relates to certain new and useit consists `in arranging a series of frictionrollers around the arm of an axle within the axle-box, which is formed with an inner enlargement, and providing said axle-box with a retaining collar and pin, and forming said rollers and axle in such a manner that longitudinal movement of the part-s is to a great extent obvia-ted.
The object of my invention is to reduce the friction in axle-bearings to the minimum, to reduce the amount of wear and grinding away of the axle and axle-box, so common in the q old formation of axle and box, and prevent to a great extent the sliding end motion when the axles are in use. I attain these objects by means of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts of my device, which will be more fully pointed out and described in the speciiication and claims.

The inner surface of said axle-box is formed of about the same diameter, except the center, which is raised or thickened to form a bearing, f, on which the rollers, in part, form a bearing.
The axle B, or axle-arm, I prefer to form of the same diameter from shoulder to linchpin or washer, except the central portion, which is surrounded with a collar, b', that acts partially as a bearing and partially as a stop to hold friction-rollers.
Friction-rollers g (usually nine in number) are formed of metal, and of the same length as the box A, the central portion of each roller being recessed to a sufficient depth to admit the annular enlargement fand the collar b, by which said friction-rollers are held in place against any end movement, the shoulders of said recesses g acting as end bearings for said friction-rollers, whereas their outer ends have bearings against the collar b and the washer c .in common with the ends of the box A. By this construction the bearings on the arm of the axle are equally divided, the weight in the vehicle is equally distributed along the arm of the axle, and less friction is encountered, and the wheel revolves on the bearing free and easy, whereby a greater load can be carried on the wagon than by the ordinary construction of axle and axle-box.
Axle-box B, as hereinbefore stated, may be formed in two half-sections, that, when united, form a hollow cylinder with equal internal diameter. One end may be formed closed, except a central perforation for the reception of the axle.
