J. PAQUETTB.
RANDING MACHINE.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
yJOSEPH PAQUE'ITE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
RANDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,850, dated November 20, 1883K.
Application filed September 26, 1883. (No niodehl To LZZ whom it may concern- Be it known that I, JosEPH PAQUETTE, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bending-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I isa side elevation. Fig. 2is an end view of the cutter-head. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections taken, respectively, on lines 3 3 and 4 4, Fig. l. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal section takenon line 5 5, Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a section of a boot or shoe sole trimmed with my machine.
My invention relates to a machine for cutting the bevels on the upper outer edges of boot and shoe soles; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointedy out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shaft journaled in boxes B, supported ou a suitable base, O. The shaft has a drivingpulley, D, and a loose pulley, D', and to one end of it is secured a cutter-head, H, carry- "ing knives I, secured thereto f by screws J, or
other suitable means. The ends of the knives project beyond the inner face of the cutterhead, forming cutting-edges whose inner corners project farther from the head than their outer corners, so that they cut a bevel ou the soles, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The knives can be adjusted to make their cutting ends protrude farther from the head by set-screws L, working through the outer portion of the head, and jamming against the rear ends of the knives. (See Fig. 5.) As the sole is being cut, itis held up against the knives by a sliding adjustable collar, N, surrounding the shaft, and made to turn therewith by a key or projection, O, on the shaft workingin a slot, P, in the collar. The outer end of the collar has preferably a iiange, N, which bears against the sole. A spiral spring, T, surrounding the collar, is employed to push the 'collar toward the head when not forced back,
thus holding the sole against the cutters to be trimmed.
I claim as my inven ioni 1. In aranding-inach ne, the combination of the shaft properly supported in journalboxes, cutter-head carrying inward-proj ecting knives, and adjustable sliding collar for holding the sole-edge against the cutting-edges of the knives, substantially asset forth.
2. In a landing-machine, the combination of the shaft supported in suitable journal-boxes,
JOSEPH PAQUETTE. In presence ofw GEO. H. KNIGHT, Josnrn WAHLE.
