I 1 Claim. (Cl. 206-62) In my application above referred to, I provided a packaging strip of a width equal to the inside width of a carton in which the panoramic windshield or the like is to be shipped, so that the strip could not shift laterally in the carton with the strip having a serpentine row of notches of a certain character for receiving the edge of the glass for supporting'the glass and so that the glass cannot move laterally relative to the strip.
Obviously, the length and width of the strip materially added to the cost thereof and it is one of the prime objects of my present invention to provide means whereby two independent strips, each having the same advantage as my original strip, can be formed from the same length of material with a minimum addition of width thereto.
Another salient object of my invention is the provision of novel means for forming the two packaging strips simultaneously from one continuous body, the body having formed therein during its fabrication a pair of oppositely directed serpentine rows of notches with means for cutting the body into the two independent packaging strips each having a desired width and a single properly arranged serpentine row of notches.
A further object of my invention is the provision of forming two identical packaging strips from a single main body by forming in said body a series of spaced longitudinally extending slits and a series of transverse slits connecting the longitudinal slits so that the body can be pulled apart to form the independent strips each having a connecting backbone and inwardly directed equidistantly spaced arms.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a packaging strip for wrap-around Windshields and the like comprising a continuous backbone or body at one longitudinal edge and a series of equidistantly spaced arms projecting from one edge of the backbone or body, the body and arms having a sinuous row of notches therein.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a formed body constituting the two independent packaging strips;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the body pulled apart and separated to form the two independent packaging strips, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail fragmentary, longitudinal sectional view through one of the strips taken on the line 3-3 of 'Figure 2, looking in the direction of ice 2 the arrows, illustrating the form of the notches in the strip for receiving the peripheral edge of a wrap-around windshield or the like.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter B generally indicates a fabricated body from which the two independent packaging and cushioning strips P and S are formed.
The packaging strips P and S are identical in construction as can be readily seen by referring to Figure 2.
The fabricated body B is of substantially the same character, as the packaging strip shown and described in my pending application above referred to, but in accordance with this invention the fabricated body B is formed slightly wider than the packaging strip in the pending application and is notched in a different manner as will later appear.
In accordance with my pending application, the body B includes a base ply or sheet 5, an intermediate ply or sheet 6 and an inner ply or sheet 7. At spaced points throughout the length of the intermediate ply 6, the same is provided with transversely extending U-shaped projections or peaks 8 having flat outer supporting faces 9. This intermediate ply 6, between the projections 8, is secured to the base ply S, in any desired way, such as by the use of an adhesive or metal stiches. The inner ply 7, has formed thereon at equidistantly spaced points transversely extending V-shaped projections or peaks 10. This inner ply 7, between the V-shaped projections or peaks 10 is firmly secured to the intermediate ply 6 in any desired way, such as by the use of an adhesive or stitches. As best shown in Figure 3, the U-shaped projections 8 of the intermediate ply 6 are received within the V-shaped projections 10 ofthe inner ply 7 and the crests of the V-shaped projections 10 are provided with slots 11 for receiving the peripheral edge of a panoramic windshield or the like W. This windshield W is partially shown in dotted lines in Figure 3. The material between the walls of the slots 11 is broken down to provide a double thickness of material which is in the nature of a tongue 12. Each tongue 12 lies over a flat outer wall 9 of a U-shaped projection 8. The glass to be shipped rests upon these tongues and hence the glass is supported by a double thickness of material and the tongues in eifect form a resilient cushioning support.
In accordance with my present invention, the slots or notches 11 extend in a general longitudinal direction of the body B, but the slots are arranged in two independent rows and each row is in somewhat of a serpentine formation, so that when a strip P or S is wrapped around the edge of the windshield or the like, the notches will follow and receive the peripheral edge of the curved glass. The rows of notches are indicated respectively by the numerals 13 and 14.
The rows of notches 13 and 14 are formed in the body B at the time of the fabrication thereof and upon the fabrication of the body B the same is provided with equidistantly spaced rows of longitudinally extending slits 15 and 16. The slits themselves are all of equal length and the slits of the row 16 lie between the slits of the row 15. The body B is also provided with equidistantly spaced transversely extending slits 17 and the slits 17 join the slits of the rows 15 and 16. Hence, as the body B leaves the fabricating machine, the body is pulled apart at the slits to provide the individual packaging strips P and S. t
Each packaging strip P and S includes a longitudinally extending continuous backbone 18 and equidistantly spaced laterally projecting arms 19. The resultant packaging strips P and S have a width equal to the width of a carton in which the glass is to be shipped.
Now referring back to the rows of notches 13 and 14, it can be seen that each row is of a serpentine formation and that this formation defines an intermediate main curved line of notches, now indicated by the reference character 20, and end curved lines of notches now indicated by the reference character 21. It will be noted that certain notches are of a greater width than others for the reception of the curved ends of the glass, as fully set forth in my pending application.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that a great saving of material results in the novel formation of the packaging strips P and S and that the packaging strips still extend the full Width of a carton and still perform their function of efiectively supporting a Windshield in a carton.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but what I claim as new is:
A flexible packaging and cushioning strip for wraparound Windshields and the like comprising a body in- 4 eluding a longitudinally extending back bone and equidistantly spaced arms formed on and projecting laterally from one longitudinal edge of the back bone, said back bone being narrower in width than the length of the arms, said body being formed of a series of plies of material, with the outermost ply at least being provided with equidistantly spaced transversely extending peaks, said peaks extending the full width of the 'back bone and the full length of the arms, and said peaks having a sinuous row of notches or rece ing the edge of a Windshield, when the strip is wrapped around a windshield.
