Description
4 adapted to bear against the lugs D of the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN o. onroN, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 288,728, dated November 20, 1883-.
v Application led June 14, 1883. (No model.)
TowZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LYMAN O. ORToN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Governors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a partial side view and partial vertical section of a governor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, partly sectional.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts vin the two figures.
My invention consists in improvements in a governor, whereby the change in the pressure of fluid occasioned by the variations of the load is adapted to regulate the speed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rotary shaft which is suitably operated by the engineto be governed. Y
B represents the belt "or band wheel, and O represents4 a radial arm of tubular or hollow form, the latter being firmly secured to said siaft A, and the former being loosely fitted on the hub of said arm.
D D represent lugs which project inwardly from the rim of the wheel B, and have between them the ends of the arm '0.
In the shaft A is a passage, a, communicating with the bore of the arm C, and said shaft has also a bore, b, whichis in communication with the passage a, and consequently with the arm C. The ends of the arm C are enlarged, forming chambers C', the open ends whereof have fitted within them pistons E, which are wheel B.
Connected with the hollow portion of the shaft A, and communicating therewith, is` a pipe, F, the joint between the parts being suitably stuffed or packed, said pipe leading to a chamber, G, which is located above the i governor-valve, and in the present case supported thereon. Vithin the chamber G is fitted a piston or head, H, which is attached to the stem H of said valve. Bearing against said head and the guide ofsaid stem is a spring, `J, adapted for .raising the head H, and consequentlythe movable portion of the valve.
K represents a supply-chamber which is connected with the pipe F. v L represents a check-valve fitted between said chamber K and pipe F, and IVI represents a gage in communication with the pipe F. The chamber K is closed at top by a head or piston, K', which is held down by means of a` ing properly opened to permit the entrance of 6 5 fiuid from the chamber K to the pipe F, the checlcvalve closing during the operation ofthe governor. Vhen the engine is started, the shaft A is rotated, and the arm C carries around with it the wheel B, so that the pistons E are brought in contact'with the lugs D. I As the load increases and the wheel B is thereby checked, the pistons are more forcibly pressed against by the lugs D and driven into the chambers C. thus exerting theirpressure on the fluid in the arm C and causing an increased pressure of the fluid in the chamber G,where by the governor-valve is opened or operated to increase the supply of steam to the engine. When the load decreases, lthe pistons E are correspondingly relieved, and thus permitted to move out of the chambers C', whereby the pressure of fluid in the arm C and chamber G is reduced, thus relieving the head H, and the governor-valve is operated to decrease the supply of steam passing to the engine. Should there be an insuflicient supply of fluid in the chambers C G, 86o., the valve L opens and permits duid in the chamber K to enter the pipe F, said valve again closing when pressure is exerted on the pipe.
`It will be'found that the governor operates with sensitiveness, and its reliability is furthered by maintaining a uniform supply of uid, for which purpose the chamber K is provided, as has been stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi l. A governor having a rotary fluid-chamber with a piston therein, and a belt or band wheel engaging with said piston, whereby, by

2 wenn@ the change of the load, the piston occasions Vw and 2t pipe forming communications between' rying pressure of the Huid in said chamber7 the same bein g exerted on the governor-Valve, substantially as' and for the purpose set forth.
2. Arotztry chamber, t piston in said Chaniber, a belt or band Wheel rotated by said arm,
, and against which the piston ubuts, 2L chamber with the head of the stem ofthe valve therein7 the two chambers, Combined and operating Io substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
vLYMAN O. ORTON.
