SPEED-GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,288, dated January 30, 183 Application filed July 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, PARKER WELLS, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Lynn, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed- Governors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to governors or regulators for steam-engines, the device being adapted to govern both feed and speed; and
1 the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The device is designed as an improvement upon or variation from the construction set iortb in an application for a patent for a device having the same objects in view, filed of even' date with this; and the object of theinvention is to produce a governor or regulator which shall be simple and cheap of construction, eflicient in service, and not liable to get out of order. It also provides for economy of room in reducing the length of the ordinary revolving vertical shaft. To enable others skilled in the art to which the invention relates to make and use the same, I will describe the construction and mode of operation, referring for that purpose to the said drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.

These parts are fully set forth in another application, and form no part of this invention.
The invention is embodied in the parts hereinafter described.
Rigid with the vertical shaft A is an arm, E, extending outwardly from opposite sides, each of said arms carrying a cage or cylinder, F, in which operates the ball D, pivoted by a yoke, (3 to an arm, 0, which in turn is pivoted at c to the sleeve 0. The centrifugal force of the balls D is resisted by a spring, Gr, which is rendered adjustable by means of a thumb-nut, g, acting upon the threaded part a. In relation to the spring, I prefer the construction shown in Fig. 3,in which not only is the spring Gr adapted to be adjusted by nut g in relation to the speed sought to be attained, but that spring G is further adjusted by an auxiliary spring, G, similarly adjustable upon the part a by means of the nutg. This compound-spring action may be employed in connection with the cage or cylinder F, as shown in Figs. 1. and or with a horizontal arm, E E, as shown in Fig. 3.
It is obvious that the elevation or depression of the nut g or y will regulate the steampressu-re upon the piston, and consequently the speed of the engine.
Theengine, when at rest, allows the sleeve 0, balls D, &c., to assume their lowest gravital point, and inthis condition the ports in the valve-cylinder and port-cylinder correspond and an equal pressure exists. When, however, steam is admitted from the boiler, such steam passing freely to the piston-cylinder and acting to start the engine with full power, the
centrifugal force, acting upon the balls D, elevates the sleeve 0, which action closes or partially closes the steam-ports between the portcylinder and the valve-cylinder, while at the same time the resisting spring-force of the ogee spring G, governed by the constant and adjustable force of the auxiliary spring G, serves to afford a medium between the steam feed and pressure, as the sameis controlled by the speed of the engine, counteracted by the influence of the governor-valve.
It will also be observed. that if a high rate of speed is required the nut g may be screwed down upon the part a to force the free ends of the spring G inward upon the balls, which action will limit the throw of the said balls D, the elevation of the sleeve 0, and the consequent capacity of the steam-ports, while if a lower rate of speed is desired the spring-force of both springs G and G may be regulated in sucha manner that the centrifugal force will more readily control the capacity of the ports for inlet of steam.
Thepoints ofthisinvention which are deemed important lie in the cage or cylinder F and l the compoundspring G G. In engine-rooms the economy of space allowed by this construction, is, in many instances, important.
What I claim as new is-- 1. The combination of the puiley b. shaft B, and gears b and a, with the sleeve 0, balls D, connections 0 O cage or cylinder F, and spring G, as and for the purposes set forth. 7 2. The vertical shaft A, arms E, balls D, sleeve 0, and connections with said balls, combined with the cage or cylinder F, adjustable spring G, and auxiliary spring G,'and with the nuts g and g for regulating speed, as and for the purposes specified.
3'. In a steam-governor, the combination of a valve-closing mechanism with a spring, G, adapted to resist centrifugal force, and with an auxiliary adjustable spring, G, adapted to regulate speed at will, as specified.
