Description
May 12, 1959 '8. w. VAN HENNIK GAME APPARATUS Filed Dec. 20, 1957 INVENTOR Burr/s M. van Hennik illkumvl United States Eatent GAME APIARATUS Burtis W. Van Hennik, Milford, Del.
Application December 20, 1957, erial No. 704,082
3 Claims. (Cl. 273-96) This invention relates to amusement devices and more particularly to a game of skill.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a game of skill adapted to be played by children and adults alike in which each player is provided with a launcher, and the device adapted to be tossed back and forth between the players resembles a flying saucer.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a game of the above type that can be played with two or more players either indoors or out of doors, a minimum of space being required for playing such game in congested and crowded areas.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a game of skill bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the parts of the game forming the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a transverse cross sectional view through the saucer element of the game shown in Figure 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a game of skill made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include two major components; namely, a saucer and a launcher 20. The saucer 10 consists of a circular main body portion 14 having a launcher engaging disc portion 15 superimposed on each side of the main body portion, of slightly smaller diameter. This launcher engaging portion is provided with simulated windows 18 which add a realistic appearance resembling a flying saucer. A smaller diameter disc 16 which resembles a turret is superimposed upon the outer side of each of the intermediate discs 15, all of the parts being in symmetrical relationship with each other to provide a three dimensional disc which appears to resemble a flying saucer of the type which has recently received much publicity.
The launcher 20 includes a ring 22 to which the handle 25 is secured by means of a shank 24 and side extensions 'ice In actual use, the saucer 10 is placed upon the ring 22 of the launcher 20, as shown in Figure 2, with the ring being of slightly smaller diameter than the diameter of the central main body portion 14 of the saucer. Thus, the intermediate disc 15 is received within the launching ring 22 so as to prevent accidental dropping thereof as the launcher is swung forwardly to launch the saucer and to impart sufficient forward thrust thereagainst.
In order to prevent injury to players and observers, and to prevent damage to buildings, vehicles, and the like, the saucer 10 is preferably constructed of a sponge rubber or plastic, or hollow rubber or plastic material. The game may be played either indoors or out of doors, each player being provided with a single launcher to catch and then impel the saucer toward one of the other players. On the other hand, the game can also be played by scoring the distance which each player can propel the saucer from a given starting point. Other playing rules can also be established in order to make it interesting for children and adults and to suit the particular playing area.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it should be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An amusement device comprising, in combination, a saucer and a launcher, said launcher comprising an elongated member having a handle at one end and a saucer support at the opposite end, said saucer having a launcher engaging portion for removable engagement with said saucer support, said saucer support comprising a ring, and said handle including a shaft secured to said ring, said saucer comprising a cylindrical main body member, of larger diameter than said ring, one side of said cylindrical main body member defining said launcher engaging portion.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said saucer further comprises a cylindrical turret of smaller diameter than said launcher engaging portion integral with said launcher engaging portion.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said launcher engaging portion is releasably received within said launcher ring.
