CARL H. PRUSMANN, OF BUGKAU-MAGDEBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO SGHAFFER & BUDENBERG, OF SAME PLACE.
TACHOMETER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 288,593, dated November 13, 18 83.
ApplieutionliledJulyQG,1883. (Nnmodehl To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, CARL HEINRICH PRiis- MANN, a citizen ofGermany, residing atBuckau- Magdeburg, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tachometers, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in tachometers, and has for its object to provide novel means for actuating the index-hand; to which end the invention consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the apparatus, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section.
' Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A indicates the casing of the apparatus, made of sheet metal or other suitable material. The front of the case is provided with a glass plate, to expose the index and prevent dust and strange matter from entering.
The operation of the apparatus, as is the case in most of these instruments, is based and aspring or springs, F, have a tendency to throw said ring into a position coincident to that of the longitudinal axis of the shaft 20 and cause said ring to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, when the parts are at rest.
Tothe oscillating ring 0 are connected, by means of a pivot or pintle, b, arms S S,which arms, at their other ends, are connected by pivots or pintles (Z to a sliding piece, K. This sliding piece K sits over the end of the shaft in and moves readily thereon in alongitudinal direction. I
Rmdicates a pulley, which serves to connect the instrument with any suitable part of a machine by a belt.
r of the springs F. This motion of the ring 0,
being communicated to the arms S S, forces the sliding pieceK outward or away from the shaft in. The sliding piece K, pressing upon the lever a2, communicates motion to the segvelocity of the machine the faster will the axis w revolve, and the resulting increased centrifugal force, actingon the ring O,will cause the sliding piece K to be further pushed out, and will cause the hand Z to pass over the dial in the direction of the arrow, therebyfurnishing a means for determining the velocity of the revolution of the pulley R. Numbers on the dial-plate are empirically arranged to indicate the velocity of revolution of the pul' ley R, thus enabling the velocity to be read from the indication of the hand Z- on the dial.
The apparatus constructed as above described provides efficient means for continua shaft within a given period of time, and at the same time the structure is simple, and not liable to become disarranged.
. ously indicating the number of revolutions of i I am aware that it is not broadly new to arrange a governor or oscillating. arm ordisk on arevolving shaft to actuate an index-handby the centrifugal force or action of such governor or oscillating arm or disk, and such, therefore, I do notclaim; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the casing A, having a glass front, a shaft, w, held against longitudinal movement, but free to revolve in a bearing on the case, and carrying a pulley at its outer end, a longitudinally-sliding piece, K, arranged upon the inner end of the shaft, and having its end arranged to press a lever, 00, to communicate motion to the indexhand Z, the ring 0, oscillating on pivots projecting laterally from the shaft within the easing, and arms S, pivoted at one end to the sliding piece on the shaft and at the other end directly to the oscillating ring, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the casingA, having a glass front, ashaft, w, held against longitudinal movement, but free to revolve in abearing on the casing, and having apulley at its outer end alongitudinal]y-slidin g piece, K, arranged upon the inner end of the shaft, and having its Intestimony whereof Ihavehereunto set my 1o end arranged to press a lever, 90, for moving hand in the presence of two subscribing wit the index-hand Z, the ring 0 mounted upon nesses. pivots proj eotinglaterally from the shaft Within the ease, springs F, coiled upon the pivots CARL HEINRICH PRUSMANN. of the ring, and arms S, pivoted at one end to the sliding piece and at the other end to the "Witnesses:
ring, said members being arranged to operate WILLIAMS 0. Fox, substantially as described. J OHS. KRAOKE.
