UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARMONT B. EDSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPEED RECORDER AND INDICATOR.
SPEGIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,109, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed September 10, 1880.
To all whom t't may concern Be it known that I, MARMoN'r B. EDSON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Speed Indicators and Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to obtain a constant indication and permanent record of the speed of machinery. For this purpose I combine with indicating and recording mechanism of usual character devices fitted for rotary motion by connections to the machinery, and provided with weights fitted for centrifugal motion, that are in connection with the actuating-rod ot' the indicating mechanism, whereby the indicating-hand and recordingpencil are moved in unison with the centrifugal motion of the weights.
My invention consists in the combination of the devices named, the construction and operation of which are set forth in detail hereinafter, with reference to the acco in pan yin g d rawings, forming part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the machine, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partially in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The indicating and recording mechanism is substantially similar to that shown in Letters Patent heretofore granted to me, and in common use forreeording steam-pressures. Being well known, I will describe such mechanism only in a general way; and it is to be understood that the indicating-hand may be dispensed with, and the recording -pencil used alone, if desired.
A is the stand, on which are fitted the drums to a that carry a belt, I), of paper, moved by clock-work contained in case B, and connected with one of the drums a.
c is a rock-shaft actuating the hand (I by a cogged segment, 0, and carrying an arm, f, that gives movement to the pencil-arm g.
C is alarm mechanism provided with stoplever h, that is moved by contact of arm z'from shaft 0. The shaft 0 is fitted with an arm from which a rod, It, depends, which rod is in connection with the operating devices next described.
(No model.)
To the under side of stand A is fixed a tubular post, I, carrying at its upper end a loose pulley, m, sustained by a collar, n, and at its lower end a flanged sleeve, 0, which is loose upon the post, and is sustained by two springarms, 2), that are connected with pulley m and sleeve 0. The sleeve 0 extends below the end of post I, and its central aperture is formed with a ring-flange, 0, forming a guide for the rod k, which extends through postl and sleeve 0. The end of rod k is fitted with a circular disk, It, or ring, that is clamped between the lower end of sleeve 0 and a screw-cap, g, on the sleeve, so that the sleeve and rod shall rise and fall together. The spring-arms p are provided with balls r at their mid-length. Upon post I is a fixed collar, 8, that limits upward movement of sleeve 0 on the post.
The pulley m is to be connected by a belt or gearing with the engine or machine, and therebypotation given to the pulley, sleeve 0, and arms 1). The balls 1" will, in operation, be thrown out more or less by centrifugal action, the sleeve 0 and rod correspondingly moved, and the indicating and recording devices thus operated.
I do not not limit myself to the mechanism and connections exactly as described, as they may be varied within the scope of my invention. The devices for obtaining centrifugal action may be of different construction, and
the rod is may be connected directly to the pencil-arm, and theindicating-hand dispensed with.
This SPGGLI-lilCllCiltOl can be combined with pressure indicating and recording instruments by placing the post Z at one side of the center of the base and extending rod 70 through the base to a pencil-arm fitted for marking the of the rod k, having disk 7c, the post Z, the spring-arms 19, substantially as described, comloose pulley m, the collars $12, the loose flanged bined together and with the actuating-rod 7c of sleeve 0, having screw-cap q, the spring-arms the indicator for operation, as specified.
1), having balls 1", and the ring-flange 0 as and MARMONT B. EDSON. 5 for the purpose specified. Witnesses:
2. In speed indicators and recorders, the post 0. SEDGWIGK, l, loose pulley m, loose sleeve 0, and weighted GEO. D. WALKER.
